Ensuring Learning: Provide specific example(s).
  • In order to assure a highly successful school, it is important for the individuals and the buildings as well as the organization to assure the following:
  • Creating conditions for learning - a culture for achievement
  • Implementing the Iowa Core - optimizing learning for all students
  • Assuring effective teaching - recognizing instructional knowledge and skill as the most powerful instruments to enhance student learning
  • Grading for learning - reporting students' progress on learning goals
  • Empowering students to develop mastery of academic content - implementing competency-based education

Summer Institute (2015)

  • Dates: June 21 and 22

  • Impacting Issues: Faiilure to get 500 participants impacted planning, presentation, and budget due to district’s budget restraints because of legislators’ and governor’s lack of action on budget recommendations, multiple conferences in June, inability of each of us to get 20
  • Communications /Marketing: articles in The Source, including highlights of presentations and registration information; Tweets,;FaceBook; mailed invitations to superintendents of all TLC grantees; e-mailed invitation to all curriculum leads, principals, and superintendents; personal contacts by Iowa ASCD board members as we each tried to get 20 additional participants.
  • Evaluation: See document shared on line. Most responses were in the Valuable and Very Valuable. 99% of the participants found the conference valuable – very valuable. We will use these data to plan for the 2016 Summer Institute, chaired by Becky Martin and Kym Stein.

  • Note: If we had been able to get 161 more participants we would have achieved our goal of 500 and would have had approximately an additional $40,000 in the bank. It would have meant also approximately 25 additional people in each breakout sessionas we had to plan for 500.

  • Not everyone needs a mic some were more difficult to understand because of echoing. Great food? Very organized conference. Sessions were a lot of “sit and get”. Can presenters make more engaging sessions?
