  • Reading Applications: Literary Text (9): Examine symbols used in literary text

Procedure/Activities:
  • Bell: Silent Reading (10 minutes) + Reading Log
  • Character Poster - Students will find 5 symbols to represent their character. They will then need to come up with two reasons why they picked that symbol. Symbols are not allowed to be generic/obvious (example: a pony for Ponyboy, a pop can for Sodapap)
  • Students will have one day to work on the poster in class and use the classroom supplies. The poster is due on Friday and students will present their poster.

  • Reading Applications (1): Identify and explain various types of characters (e.g., flat, round dynamic, static) and how their interactions and conflicts affect the plot.
  • Reading Process (2): Answer literal, inferential, evaluative and synthesizing questions to demonstrate comprehension of grade-appropriate print texts and electronic and visual media.

  • Review Study Guide and Flash Cards (Quiz Tomorrow)
  • Students will begin writing a 4-paragraph paper on their character. Each paragraph will answer one question about their character and students will have to give examples from the book to prove their answers. Students will edit their own work and the teacher will edit/revise as well. Each paragraph will have a topic sentence which will include their answer to the question followed by examples from the book and then a closing sentence. Page 33 in packet.
  • Students will start paragraph 1 after the directions are given.
