Please read this agreement carefully before signing.

The Kalamazoo College Study Abroad Program in Thailand may include hiking, climbing, rappelling, canoeing, wilderness camping, sea kayaking, snorkeling, running, wilderness backpacking, swimming, travel in remote and rugged terrain, living and working in villages, and travel on boats, trains, and buses and other activities. Its purpose is to provide participants safe, challenging, experiential activities requiring problem solving, decision making, self and group awareness, trust, cooperation, care, and consideration of others as a part of its academic goals. The program is not recreational.

In consideration of being allowed to participate in the Kalamazoo College Study Abroad Program in Thailand, I ______, hereby acknowledge and agree to the following conditions of my participation.

I acknowledge and understand that certain elements of the program in Thailand are physically and emotionally demanding, and that not all hazards and dangers associated with the activities can be foreseen. I, on behalf of myself, my heirs, and personal representatives, hereby release Kalamazoo College, the Center for International Programs, the International Sustainable Development Studies Institute, Chiang Mai University, and any cooperating institution or organization, their officers, employees, successors and agents from any and all claims and causes of action for inconvenience, damage to loss of property, medical or hospital care, personal illness or injury or death arising out of my participation in the study abroad program in Thailand and/or travel or activity conducted by or under the control of Kalamazoo College or any cooperating institution or organization. I understand that it is impossible for Kalamazoo College, the Center for International Programs or the Thailand program to guarantee my absolute safety and that my participation in the program exposes me to certain risks, dangers, and injuries, including fatality, due to acts of God, inclement weather, transportation, slipping, falling, insect bites, equipment failure, food allergies, and all other circumstances inherent to an outdoor and developing country setting, may exist in the program’s activities.

I assume full responsibility for my personal health. I will notify the program director of any change in my medical, physical, or emotional condition. I agree that I will exercise good judgment in regard to my own health, safety, and well-being while participating in this program. If for any reason, I question my ability to participate in the activity, I will tell the leader prior to participation in any program activity.

The rules of conduct for student participants are outlined in the Kalamazoo College Student Conduct Code, the Kalamazoo College Study Abroad Handbook, the Thailand program guidebook and are elaborated on in verbal and written form during the pre-departure and arrival orientation meetings and in the briefings prior to activities and excursions. I expressly agree to obey all of the program’s safety regulations and follow all directions and warnings given by the program staff and activity leaders. I voluntarily assume and accept for all risks, dangers, and injuries resulting from either my failure to obey safety regulations and directions of activity leaders. I agree that the College has the right to withdraw or dismiss me from the program if at any time in the judgment of the Director or the Associate Director of the Center for International Programs there has been a violation of College policy or regulations; disruptive behavior or conduct which could bring the program into disrepute; for medical conditions which affect my ability to perform the essential functions of a student or cause me to be a direct threat to myself or others, or on academic grounds; or my behavior poses a danger to myself or others. I understand further that a decision to dismiss me from the program will be final and no refund will be made.

I have read, understand, and agree to the provisions of the Kalamazoo College Study Abroad Handbook, Thailand Program Handbook, and this Participant Agreement and Release.
