In this class, we will read a variety of novels and short stories. The material will come from various genres and will range from classic to contemporary novles. Along with the reading assignments, there will be reading questions, essays and tests.We will also work on learning how to take notes during class. I hope to share my love of reading with the students while preparing them for higher level courses. I alternate the material we study every other year so that students can take it during both their 9th and 19th grade years without repeating the same material. Some of the books we will be reading this coming year include The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis, Alabama Moon by Watt Key, Farewell the Manzanarby Jeanne Wataksuki, Unwind by Neal Shusterman, I’ll Always Write Back by Martin Ganda and Caitlyn Alifirenka, The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, and The Elfstones of Shanarraby Terry Brooks. Most books are available at your local library so it isn’trequiredto purchase them. No other textbook is required.

Mythology Literature(10th – 12th grade)– Mrs. Cherie Scogin

In this class we will learn about myths from around the world and the role they have played in literature. We will cover myths from various cultures. The first semester will be dedicated to Norse, Roman and Greek mythology. The second semester will include Egyptian, African, Native American, Indian, Celtic, American, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese among others.Students will be expected to write 2 essay/research papers. I will be using Edith Hamilton’s Mythology for some of the reading during the 1st semester. Students will also need to have internet access for various reading selections and videos.

American Literature I(11th-12th gr) - Dr. Don Gilliland

This survey of AmericanLiteraturewill extendfrom theEnglishcolonial period (starting around 1600) through the Civil War. We’llbegin with the Puritans, especially the colonial leaders William Bradford and John Winthrop and the poets Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor. In the early eighteenthcenturywe’ll consider Jonathan Edwards and the “Great Awakening,” the poetry of Phyllis Wheatley, and the captivity narrative of Mary Rowlandson. We’ll then turn to Benjamin Franklin’sAutobiographyand the period of the American Revolution.We’ll conclude withthe nineteenth-century “American Renaissance” in the fiction of Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville; the essays of “Transcendentalists” Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau; poetry of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman; and the slave narrative of Frederick Douglass.

This survey of British Literature will extend fromtheMiddleAges to the eighteenthcentury. We'll begin with the Anglo-Saxon epicBeowulfand the Middle English of Chaucer’sCanterbury Tales. We’ll continue into the sixteenth century witha particular focus on Shakespearean drama; we mayalso considersuch poets asEdmund Spenser and PhilipSidney. From the early seventeenth century, we’ll explore John Milton’sParadise Lostand the “Metaphysical” poets. We'll conclude with the period of theRestoration andEighteenth Century, and with works ofAlexander Pope andJonathan Swift.
