As a guide, the Advanced Course entry standard for younger applicants (year 7) is approximately Grade 5 (ABRSM) with merit/distinction. A higher standard is generally expected of older students, however consideration will be given to your musical potential as well as your age and instrument.

The approximate entry level for Music First applicants aged 7-11 yearsis Grade 1 (ABRSM).

Our main audition period is in April and May,howeverauditions may be held at other times in the year if places are available. If applying for a bursary, we advise that you audition during the main period.

Applicants wishing to study piano must have access to an acoustic instrument at home.

What to expect at your audition

We will do our utmost to ensure that your audition is a friendly and positive experience. Two people will listen to you, the Head of the Junior Conservatoire and a specialist on your instrument. You should prepare the following:

two contrasting pieces/songs on your principal study and one piece/song on your additional study (if applicable)

scales and arpeggios for instrumentalists: vocal exercises for singers

sight-reading

pitch and rhythm tests

a discussion, during which you will be asked about your musical aspirations and other interests

What happens next

We will contact you to confirm we have received your application and then contact you a second time with the date and time of your audition, giving you at least 2 weeks’ notice of this.

In the event that you cannot attend at the date/time given, we will offer you a further alternative date.

The £15 audition fee is non-refundable.
