Exciting New Upgrades Coming!

JOHNS FAMILY NATURE CONSERVANCY AND LEBANON CREEK GREENWAY TRAIL CONNECTION

The Johns’ Family

From the early days of the Central Okanagan Land Trust, brother and sister, Nancy and Alf Johns informed the Trust they intended donating the 800 acres that they owned to the Trust. Nancy passed away in 2002 before any gift was made, and Alf honored their joint intention - donating 160 acres in 2002 and 80 acres in both 2003 and 2004. Alf's solicitor, Geoff White, obtained values acceptable to Revenue Canada.

Creating a new partnership
The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) entered into a 99 year lease of the 320 acres on the understanding that their leasehold rights are deferred until the passing of Alf.

RDCO committed to lease the remaining 480 acres under the same conditions as the initial 320 acres.

As Tenant, RDCO has agreed by way of lease to abide by the wishes of the Johns regarding the future use of the property. The general provision is that the leased land will be a dedicated park for the use of the public. Their obligations include detailed provisions that require protection of habitat, not harvesting trees without consent, and sharing management plans.

Connecting two major parks

This new project will create a trail from the entrance of Lebanon Creek Greenway up approximately 1900m of Lebanon Creek to the Johns Family Nature Conservancy Regional Park. Once in the JFNCRP, the trail will continue up Lebanon Creek for 600 m before turning west and continuing for 2500 m to the west boundary of the park. Integral to this public access will be the addition of a washroom facility that will help address waste management as the park’s public usage increases.
