Job Purpose:

To support the development and delivery of a range of active and sustainable travel projects within the Education and Young People (EYP) setting; primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities.

To provide support to the school travel professionals and broader ‘whole’ school community by sharing learning across projects, developing and maintaining resources which align with the Curriculum for Excellence and promoting Sustrans’ opportunities for engaging with and empowering young people, their parents and teachers.

To support the Smarter Choices Coordinator (Education & Young people) in the co-ordination of the completion of the national annual Hands Up Scotland Survey working closely with the Research and Monitoring Unit, and the co-ordination of the delivery of cycle parking grants funds to local authorities.

Place in Organisation Structure:

The post-holder will report to the Smarter Choices Coordinator (Education & Young people), Scotland and be part of the Behaviour Change Team. The postholder will be expected to work closely with other members of staff working in schools, colleges, universities, across communities and with workplaces.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To support the delivery and development of new practical active and sustainable travel projects in Education & Young People (EYP) settings, working closely with the Behaviour Change Team in Scotland.
  2. To provide the first point of contact and to support the local authority School Travel Professional Network and other stakeholders by providing advice, liaison and other support.
  3. To manage the budget and administrate Transport Scotland grant funding to deliver cycle parking in schools including; announcing fund to partners, oversight of budget, processing application claim forms, generating Memorandum of Understanding and other contractual documents and collating reports.
  4. To support the Research and Monitoring Unit to produce the Hands Up Scotland Survey.
  5. To develop and maintain resources for schools which align with the Curriculum for Excellence.
  6. To work in partnership with other national organisations including; Living Streets, Cycling Scotland and Eco-schools Scotland
  7. To develop and deliver School Travel Professional Seminars and workshops promoting best practice and shared learning across the School Travel Professional network.
  8. To provide advice, liaison and other support for schools champions, including teachers, parents, head teachers, pupils and local residents.
  9. To provide support, advice and training for local authorities and other agencies delivering Safer Routes to Schools infrastructure, working with Community Links team and school travel plans and resources, and to engage in monitoring school travel plan effectiveness.
  10. To attend and facilitate at national conferences and events and schools champion and local authority officer and other training events.
  11. To support the development and delivery of student specific projects across colleges and universities, including linking with Active Travel Champions.
  12. To ensure that project monitoring and reporting documentation is completed and processed, as required.

  1. To support and comply with the charity’s guidance on branding, tone of voice and key messages, positively contributing towards raising Sustrans’ profile.

  1. To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity.
  2. To ensure own personal development by working to objectives set as part of the Charity’s appraisal process.

Working Conditions:

The post-holder will work from the Sustrans office in Edinburgh. The work will involve travel around Scotland and the post-holder will be expected to travel as sustainably as possible. The post-holder may also be expected to occasionally work on a flexible basis including some weekends and overnight stays with occasional visits to Head Office in Bristol and other regional offices as required.

Person Specification:

Criteria / Essential
Qualifications, education and training / Educated to Higher / A level
Experience / Experience of project management and delivery
Experience of partnership working with local authorities, NGOs and/or local community projects
Experience of working within the Scottish Education setting
Experience of working with children and/or young people in either a formal or informal setting
Skills and abilities / Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Good presentation skills
Events co-ordination, facilitation and management skills
The ability to be organised and efficient, with effective time management skills
The ability to plan, prioritise own workload and work to tight deadlines and competing priorities
Good team working skills with the ability and enthusiasm to support and motivate others
Excellent IT literacy including use of MS Office suite
