Job Title: Progressive Swim Instructor / Water Safety Instructor
Company Overview: CampSpectacular offers a traditional day camp experience for children with high-functioning autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and PDD NOS. Our unique camp has social workers, special education teachers and counselors ready to meet each camper’s individual needs. The program provides campers with a challenging, educational and fun outdoor experience in a natural setting.
Job Summary:The Progressive Swim Instructor will administer swim tests to the participants. The Progressive Swim Instructor will evaluate and classify the campers’ swimming ability as well as, to identify any fears or circumstances that could affect the camper’s safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Administer swim test as outlined in the Camp Spectacular Safety Plan while standing/sitting on pool deck
- Evaluate and classify the campers’ swimming ability
- Identify any fears or circumstances that could affect the camper’s safety
- Assign to equipment and activities commensurate with the camper’s abilities.
- Notify the Aquatics Director and/or lifeguard in writing of the ability classification (“swimmer” or “non-swimmer”) of each participant
- Adhere to standard safety practices, as well as job, department, and Center policies and procedures related to safety
- This individual will ensure the safety of all people in the pool area following the protocols set down in the CampSpectacular safety plan
- Participate in training and development activities in accordance with department and Agency policies
- Demonstrate a desire and ability to learn and be taught about the developmentally disabled population and approaches for managing the associated challenges
- Be patient, enthusiastic, fun-loving, hard-working and be willing and able to put the needs of others before your own and work in a cooperative, team-oriented atmosphere
- Be flexible and able to work well with others, maintain open and effective communication
- Be accepting and respectful of those who think, behave, and interact differently
- Enjoy working in the outdoors in all the weather that is part of a summer in Upstate New York.
Working Environment
- Works 2 hours a day for three consecutive Mondays
- May reside at camp (rustic, constant community living) or off-camp
- Rustic outdoor environment/facilities
- Subject to environmental influences such as inclement weather, insects, heat, etc.
- Extreme independence
Physical Demands
- Required to work in high heat/humidity
- Frequent lifting and/or carrying of adults and children for short distances
- Work with toxic/hazardous materials
- Required to guard swimmers for extended periods of time (standing or sitting)
