Job Title: Postdoctoral fellow in targeted proteolysis

Salary: £28,695 - £37,394 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Salary progression beyond this point is subject to performance.

Hours of Work: Full time 36.25 hours per week

Location: Sutton Bonington Campus, South Laboratory

Reporting to: Professor Michael Holdsworth

Purpose of the New Role:

The purpose of this role will be to support the principle investigator with research by developing research objectives and proposals for a research project funded by BBSRC in the area of targeted proteolysis. The person appointed will be expected to plan and conduct work using approaches or methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research, and will be responsible for writing up their work for publication.

The person appointed will have the opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods and extend their research portfolio.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Plan and conduct research, including Arabidopsis molecular genetics, physiology and biochemistry as required by grant objectives, under the overall supervision of Professor Michael Holdsworth, in collaboration with Professor Neil Oldham (Chemistry) including:
a. day to day responsibility for the conduct and satisfactory progress of the research
b. keep meticulous experimental records, analyse and illuminate data, interpret reports and bring new insights to research area
c. keep current with the relevant literature, evaluate and criticise texts
d. communicate with the other collaborators and attend meetings with them as required, building contacts to develop knowledge and understanding, forming relationships for future collaborations
e. contribute ideas and be involved with the longer term planning of the project in consultation with Prof Holdsworth
f. work safely and responsibly with regard to School rules
g. be prepared to share their expertise and guidance with more junior members of the laboratory e.g. research students.
h. contribute to group meetings. / 70%
2. / Write up results and present internally and externally as appropriate, under the overall supervision of Professor Michael Holdsworth / 10%
3. / General office duties as required, any other duties appropriate to the grade and role of the post holder. / 5%
4. / Laboratory supervision of a technical post of years 1 and 2 / 15%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / BSc or equivalent in any area of biology.
Concluding or having concluded a PhD in the area of the genetics and biochemistry of the plant N-end rule pathway / PhD in plant molecular biology including work on biochemistry, physiology, bioinformatics and cell biology.
Skills/Training / Experimental plant biology, protein degradation biochemistry
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information.
Evidence of sufficient breadth or depth of research methodologies and techniques to work in research area.
Developing research skills, with the ability to creatively apply relevant research approaches, models, techniques and methods
Ability to contribute to method improvement.
Analytical ability to facilitate conceptual thinking, innovation and creativity.
