Request for Software:

Description:

None. I’m requesting handheld technology devices. Please see below.

Estimated Cost:

Required Hardware (if any):

Description:

I am writing this SCAP grant to apply for funding to purchase 6 handheld Global Positioning System units to use with my undergraduate and graduate Teaching Elementary Social Studies classes. I would like to use the units in the Cortland area and when I take my students to Camp Huntington in Raquette Lake, NY.

I have chosen the Garmin Rino 110 units because they offer global positioning, mapping and two-way radio capabilities (for more information, please see: ).

*** Last year, I applied for a SCAP grant for 12 GPS receivers and was awarded the funds for 6 of them. I’ve used them often and would like to have 6 more so I can better facilitate small groups to use them (hand-held technology offers limited screen viewing space so it is most helpful to keep group sizes small, but with only 6 devices, it’s difficult to keep all students on task because they all can’t gather around a small viewing screen efficiently). ***

Estimated Cost:

Each unit is approximately $200. Therefore, the estimated cost is:

$1,200.

Use by Students:

Class(es) and Number of students enrolled:

EDU 378: Teaching Elementary Social Studies ~ 16 students enrolled.

EDU 514: Teaching Elementary Social Studies, Graduate class ~ 40 students enrolled.

How will your request fulfill SCAP guidelines to benefit students by increasing their personal hands-on access to computing, computing equipment, and instructional applications of computing?

This grant will provide funding to purchase GPS units so future teachers can explore and practice using hand-held technology in nature while developing social studies, mathematics, science and technological skills.

When preservice teachers participate in future activities that use GPS units, they can be guided to contemplate ways that similar activities could be planned and implemented into elementary school classrooms. Ultimately, I would like to use the GPS units to have my preservice teachers plan and implement lessons for elementary school students. In this way, the elementary students will also be able to use the GPS units.

In order for the GPS units to be available to students when not being used for instructional purposes, I will create a sign-out system for them to be borrowed by small groups or individual students.

If you are requesting software for a particular computer lab, please specify which lab

None.

Additional Comments:

*** Thank you so much for funding my previous SCAP grant. It was very beneficial for my students and local elementary students to learn by using hand-held technology. Please click on the link to read a Cortland Standard article to better understand the work that I’ve done with the GPS units provided by my previous SCAP grant.
