Job Title:Policy Officer (Personal Safety)

Salary:£27,000 per annum pro rata

Purpose of Job:To lead on Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s policy work relating to personal safety and lone working in order to help to effect change that reduces the risk of violence and aggression. To research, analyse and write detailed and focused policy positions in order to ensure that Suzy Lamplugh Trust continues to be the expert policy voice on personal safety.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Proactively keep abreast of personal safety and lone working issues
  1. To lead on the development, delivery and evaluation of policy work relating to personal safety
  1. To ensure that information gathered from the monitoring and evaluation of Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s charitable and commercial activities are reflected in new and existing policies
  1. To lead on Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s annual National Personal Safety Day campaign
  1. To Keep abreast of academic and research developments in the field of personal safety and build a network of relationships with academic institutions working in the field of personal safety
  1. To provide colleagues, including the communications officer, fundraiser and director with information and statistics as required and to ensure that the information provided is up-to-date.
  2. Maintain and grow effective relationships with partner agencies, civil servants, policy makers and national and local decision makers
  1. Develop policy recommendations, write policy reports, lobby government and other decision makers and stakeholders and respond on behalf of Suzy Lamplugh Trust to government enquiries, consultations or other relevant initiatives.
  1. Undertake research, consultation and analysis to inform policy work and consult, formally and informally, with people with expertise of personal safety to inform the development of our policy and campaigns work
  1. Disseminate Suzy Lamplugh Trust policies and campaigns through external presentations, publications, articles or briefings for a variety of audiences
  1. Take part in a rota to respond to reactive press calls out of office hours
  1. Represent Suzy Lamplugh Trust externally and as a media spokesperson
  1. Ensure relevant project budgets are monitored effectively, and expenditure is reported back to funders in line with their requirements
  1. Work with the fundraising team to help strengthen Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s case for support. Work closely with fundraisers to draft fundraising applications and input into fundraising appeals and reports to funders.
  1. Undertake other duties that may from time to time be necessary and are compatible with the nature and grade of the post

Person Specification

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in a policy and research role
  • Experience of working in at least two of the following policy fields: crime and justice, workplace safety, health and safety, personal safety, transport, youth work, learning disability
  • Ability to understand and analyse complex information including statistics, research reports and legislation
  • Ability to design, carry out and analyse research
  • Experience of developing and maintaining effective working relationships both internally and externally, including negotiation with organisations or individuals with differing perspectives and agendas.
  • Good knowledge of local and national government structures
  • Ability to manage projects, including planning, implementing, over-seeing and evaluating multiple projects to meet agreed deadlines and targets
  • Experience of delivering public talks and/or training to internal or external audiences

  • Experience of recruiting and supervising volunteers
  • Experience of writing copy for use on websites, blog or social media
