Job Purpose:

The On Street Canvasser/ Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of on-street canvassers and will ensure effective co-ordination of canvassing shifts and be the central contact for managing staff safety.The role willalso carry out door-to-door canvassing duties.

The on-street canvasser role is responsible for carrying out door-to-door canvassing with targeted households. This will involve gathering key information about how residentscurrently travel, identifying barriers and opportunities for changing behaviour,offering free information and advice on sustainable travel modes and referring to additional services where appropriate. The post holder will also be involved in subsequent hand-delivery of travel information packs to participating households.

Background

Sustrans will be delivering a new Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) project in Taunton. The project aims to reduce car use in the town by offering households free travel information, motivation and advice on making more journeys by foot, bike and public transport.

The project field team will be contacting 5,000 households in south Taunton during May – July 2017. A local office has been established from which the project’s fieldwork operations will be run. Funding for the initiative is being provided by a private developer, with the support of Somerset County Council and other partners.

Key Responsibilities:

Delivery of projects or services

1.To supervise a team of on-street canvassesrsand be responsiblefor dailyissues, performance, health and safety and management of data collected and documentation.

2.To make direct contact households on the doorstep and gather key information about how family members travel.

3.To identify which options and free information on walking, cycling and public transport would be of benefit to the household.

4.To accurately record information gathered using paper-based forms.

5.To collect personalised information packs from the project field office and hand-deliver these to participating households using a bike trailer

6.To conduct all contact and conversations in a professional manner in accordance with project requirements.

7.To ensure all contacts and conversations are accurately recorded.

Communication and marketing

8.To support and comply with the charity’s guidance on branding, tone of voice and key messages, positively contributing towards raising Sustrans’ profile and the PTP Project in Taunton.

Training and personal development

9.To attend essential Sustrans training as required by the Charity, including role-specific training.

Working Conditions:

The working hours will include early evening work and Saturdays.Typical hours will be Monday to Thursday (4pm to 8pm) and Saturday (10am to 2pm, or 12pm to 4pm). This schedule is subject to alteration in poor weather conditions. Full training will be provided. All travel of on street canvassers will be undertaken by sustainable means.

Additional on-street survey work to undertake post project monitoring may be available between August and October 2017.
