Job Title:Media and Communications Officer

Reports to:Policy and Development Manager

Full/Part timePart time: 21 hours per week

Salary:£27,000 per annum pro rata

Purpose of Job:To raise the profile of the organisation through media and communications activities. To manage reactive media enquiries and lead on proactive engagement with the press. To lead on Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s internal and external communication.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Brief national, regional and local media (print, broadcast and online) on Suzy Lamplugh Trust and its activities.
  1. Act as a media spokesperson in national and local press
  1. To lead on the development and delivery of Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s communication strategy
  1. To write engaging and appealing content on key services, campaigns and fundraising activities, including updates on major developments and successes.
  1. To provide expert advice and assistance to the policy and development manager and director to implement reputation management plans
  1. To identify and maximise potential opportunities to increase Suzy Lamplugh Trust’s media profile
  1. To ensure that all communication is of an appropriate high standard, consistent with Suzy Lamplugh Trust brand and key messages
  1. Write and sell in content about Suzy Lamplugh Trust commercial activities to trade press in order to help the Commercial Team generate new sales
  1. Work with the Commercial Team to build relationships with potential corporate partners
  1. To develop specialist knowledge in key areas of Suzy Lamplugh Trust activities and to lead on the drafting of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust response to key media issues
  1. Take part in a rota to respond to reactive press calls out of office hours
  1. Respond effectively to all media enquiries, providing handling advice to staff and senior managers in order to promote and safeguard the organisation
  1. Provide support and briefing to victims of crime participating in communications work to ensure they have a positive experience
  1. Undertake other duties that may from time to time be necessary and are compatible with the nature and grade of the post

Person Specification

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience working in a communications role
  • Experience of acting as a spokesperson on television and/or radio
  • Experience of working with case studies and developing material for media work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex information in clear, understandable messages
  • Experience of planning and risk management
  • Ability to draft copy for a variety of audiences
  • Experience of writing andmanaging a variety of different content
  • Excellent copy writing skills and an eye for detail

Desirable

  • Experience of writing for trade press
  • Experience of working on campaigns
  • Experience of recruiting and supervising volunteers
  • Experience of working in a small team
