Reports to: Functional Skills Coordinator

Aim

  • Deliver a range of ICT programmes, ranging from entry level up to level 2, to homeless and vulnerable adults in order to improve confidence and competence in IT.
  • Under the general direction of the Functional Skills Coordinator, to plan, organise and deliver up to 14 hours of teaching a week in the specialist area.

Dimension

  • Some supervision of volunteers may be required
  • The post holder will have no budget responsibility

Circumstances

  • 21 hours per week (0.6 contract) – working pattern to be agreed
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required
  • Based in Liverpool with services delivered in partners facilities across Merseyside
  • CSM will run three twelve week terms per year. Terms breaks will be used for ad-hoc events such as jobs fairs, award ceremonies, taster sessions, end of term performances and preparation for the next term.
  • A satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required for this role. Crisis Skylight Merseyside also works with young people aged 16 and 17 and so the DBS check will establish the successful applicant’s suitability to work with children as well as vulnerable adults.

Salary

  • £14,198 pa (£23,664 pa pro rata)

Background

Crisis is the national charity for single homeless people. We are dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering life-changing services and campaigning for change.

Crisis Skylight, our award winning and accredited education, training and employment services, offer practical and creative workshops with formal learning opportunities that lead to qualifications and finding work. Crisis has Skylight centres open in London, Oxford and Newcastle and operates outreach services in Merseyside, Birmingham, South Yorkshire and Edinburgh.

In Merseyside, Skylight services are delivered on an outreach basis in existing homeless and community facilities. Our locations cover Liverpool, Wirral, South Sefton and St. Helens. In future years we plan to increase the range and depth of the services on offer and extend our services to North Sefton and Knowsley.

Principle Accountabilities

Recruitment and assessment

  • To recruit and select learners on the basis of need
  • To undertake initial and formative assessment of learners, and respond accordingly
  • To create and administer assessments which inform the development of training & learning plans taking into account individual needs, styles and interests
  • To deliver a range of IT training and assessment activities

Teaching and learning support

  • To deliver ICT training and assessment activities in accordance with best practice
  • To plan, reflect and review each learner’s programme on a regular basis
  • To prepare and use suitable and good quality learning materials
  • To prepare schemes of work and lesson plans in accordance with standard practice
  • To establish and maintain standards of conduct with and for the learners
  • To adhere to departmental policies when dealing with aggressive or challenging behaviour
  • To implement blended learning integrating online and classroom teaching

Certification and quality assurance

  • To assess the learners’ progress and attainment against the standards set for the programme
  • To make and keep appropriate assessment records
  • To liaise as required with internal moderators and other representatives of awarding bodies
  • To maintain and provide required records for accountability purposes
  • To source and maintain accreditation procedures and associated paperwork
  • To fulfil accreditation requirements and administer and assess examinations

Contribution to the team and organisation

  • Evaluate own teaching critically and using this to improve effectiveness; taking responsibility for own professional development
  • Contribute to IT and CSM initiatives on teaching and learning, including joint planning and team teaching
  • To promote well-being and development of the organisation internally and externally

  • Support and manage volunteers as required within the classes

General

  • To develop and maintain an understanding of the charity’s work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people

  • To carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job

Person Specification

Essential

  1. The applicant must either hold or be willing to work towards a teaching qualification e.g. PTTLS, DTTLS, Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, PGCE / Cert Ed
  2. Hold an IT qualification at a minimum of level 2
  3. Experience of delivering a range of IT training from beginner to level 2
  4. Proven experience of engaging vulnerable, disengaged or hard to reach adults in relevant training programmes in creative and exciting ways
  5. Experience of developing teaching and learning materials and the tracking and monitoring of individuals progress
  6. Experience in the preparation and planning of assessments and individual learning plans
  7. A capacity to work on your own and as part of a team with a willingness to reflect upon and develop ones own practice
  8. Able to communicate effectively with a range of people
  9. Ability to keep accurate and up to date records, sharing information as and when appropriate
  10. A passion for innovative learning, creativity and engaging people in lifelong learning and skills
  11. Commitment to Crisis’ purpose and values including equality and social inclusion

Desirable

  1. Access to own transport with ability to travel throughout Merseyside
