JOB TITLE:Hall Warden

Overall Purpose of Job
- To live on site and take an active role in the maintenance of welfare at all times:
- To take particular responsibility for reporting incidents occurring during their duty periods;
- To provide a link between the University and its residential students;
- To help foster a good living environment with special regard to student welfare, discipline and safety.
Main Activities and Duties
- To ensure that all administrative and residential regulations are observed by residential students.
- Calling on such assistance, e.g. Porter, Accommodation Officer, Estates, Emergency Services etc. as the circumstances dictate.
- To be familiar with the University’s emergency, incident, accident and disciplinary procedures and to report, in writing, any relevant matters to the Accommodation Officer.
- To establish
(i)both formal and informal contacts with resident students and
(ii)to establish and to attend meetings of Hall Committees or other resident student forums as required.
- To be an active member of the resident community and to be readily accessible to students who are resident within the Hall Warden’s defined area of responsibility. To be available on site at all times whilst on “first call” duty as specified in the terms and conditions of appointment.
- To foster the formation of community within the Halls at all times by being visible in the performance of the duties, and having an active regard for the lives and welfare of the residents and to co-operate with other Hall Wardens in their duty periods to maintain good order and discipline. In addition, Hall Wardens may be asked to assume or to take responsibility as above for the residents within a particular building or area as part of their general duties.
- To make regular tours of the site during the “first call” duty period and to be aware of the life of the Hall community at all times.
- To liaise with the line manager when reporting to Estates any maintenance defects, hazards etc. with the degree of urgency appropriate to the situation.
- To provide cover for “first call” duty periods at short notice for sickness or absences of other Hall Wardens.
- To assist other members of University staff in emergencies, fire drills and to assist the line manager in communication with the students and in projects involving residents as and when necessary.
- To be available to assist the hall management with the organization and implementation of induction for new residents at the start of the academic session.
- To be available to assist with the arrival of new students at the beginning of each residential period.
- To maintain vigilance in Hall security at all times and to encourage student residents to do the same.
- To have a regard, at all times and including vacation periods, for student welfare and the health and safety of residents.
- To assist residents with help and advice when it is sought and to refer students to Student Services/Support or other welfare or advice agencies, including medical services, if necessary.
- To attend weekly meetings at a time designated by Accommodation Officer and to report to the Accommodation Officer during the day prior to the commencement of the “first call” duty and on the Friday prior to weekend “first call” duties.
- Alcohol is not to be consumed whilst on duty and you are to remain on campus for the whole period of duty.
- The Accommodation Officer is to be informed prior to any changes to the Duty Rota.
- To keep an accurate record of monthly timesheets, and to submit these to the Accommodation Officer by the 10th of each month for countersigning.
Scope
- Hall Wardens will normally be part of a team operating on a roster. Although duties are principally related to the specific roster periods, Hall Wardens may also have general duties associated with the resident students of a particular building or area and will be expected to assist other staff in the event of major problems or if requested by the line manager in special circumstances.
- Hall Wardens are appointed to contribute to the formation of good community on residential sites and will be expected to be aware of issues affecting or concerning residents.
- The accommodation provided for the performance of Hall Warden’s duties is to be occupied as the principal residence for the duration of the contract. Hall Wardens are expected to be full members of the resident community.
Description / Essential / Desirable
1. Educations and qualifications / (a) Good secondary education
(b) At least one year in HE
2.Experience and skills / (c) Experience or interest in student affairs and issues affecting communities of students. / (j) Experience of residential environment, student halls, hostel or other sheltered or management accommodation.
(d) Ability to communicate effectively. / (k) Experience of working in a busy customer oriented or service environment.
(l) Ability to communicate effectively through the medium of Welsh.
3. Personal qualities / (e) Confident, competent, diplomatic and an amenable manner.
(f) Ability to work in a demanding environment with minimum supervision.
(g) Ability to work alongside and collaborate with a wide range of staff and other relevant agencies.
