Overview

The post holder will be responsible for raising funds from companies, foundations and trusts to support the work of Wide Horizons.

They will be part of the project development team, setting up new projects to take the work of the charity forward, and be part of the team working on Adventure Learning Partnerships (our multi-year Adventure Learning programme with schools).

This role will be part relationship fundraising and part fundraising through application and bids processes.

The post holder will report to the Head of Fundraising.

Main Responsibilities

General – 10% of time as a guide.

  • Contribute fully to the fundraising business plan that the fundraising team develop in line with the organisational strategy.
  • To act as an ambassador for the organisation, representing Widehorizons with external stakeholders as required.
  • Report to the Head of Fundraising on a monthly basis.
  • Input into the creation of new projects.
  • Promote cross-team working practices through example.
  • Act to help organisational change towards a culture of fundraising across the organisation.

Fundraising – 90% of time as a guide.

  • Generate voluntary income from companies and trusts through a wide range of techniques, building and maintaining effective donor relationships along the way.
  • Take the lead on generating new relationships with companies.
  • Seek out opportunities for partnerships with companies to help support Wide Horizons’ initiatives.
  • Take a lead on the development of relationships with key supporters.
  • Research and approach new trusts for funding opportunities.
  • Create attractive proposals for companies and applications for foundations and trusts.
  • Monitor the financial aspect of grants and projects, reporting to funders where necessary.
  • Manage relationships with corporate, foundations and trusts donors and prospect donors.
  • Input into the management and support of Adventure Learning Partnership fundraising by facilitating partnerships with local businesses, national companies and trusts and foundations.
  • Support the CEO and Head of Fundraising with the relationship management of High Net Worth individuals and key corporate and trust supporters.
  • Work with colleagues in the finance team to accurately manage and report on restricted and project funding.
  • Maintain a high degree of innovation and creativity in the fundraising programme.
  • Input into the development of projects, mechanisms and products to support income generating activities, in line with the organisational business plan.
  • Help to promote a culture of collaborative fundraising across the organisation, supporting all parts of the business with their fundraising ideas.
  • Support the fundraising team where necessary with other projects, events and initiatives.
  • Any other reasonable duties relevant to this position.

Person Specification

Requirements of the job
Knowledge / Essential;
  • Experience of raising funds from companies
  • Raising funds from Trusts and Foundations, i.e. through a bid writing or application process
  • An understanding of corporate relationship management
  • Research techniques for grant funding
Desirable;
  • Gift Aid, VAT in relation to fundraising
  • Copy writing
  • Knowledge of the educational curriculum
  • Outdoor education sector/adventure knowledge

Skills / Essential;
  • Proven communication skills, both externally and internally in a multi-site organisation (verbal and written)
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports for donors
  • Self-starter with ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to prioritise multiple demands
