JOB TITLE: EDUCATION OFFICER

RESPONSIBLE TO:EDUCATION MANAGER

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

SALARY:£17,500

JOB PURPOSE:To work with the Education Manager to strategically liaise with, and support formal education establishments, further developing the Theatre Royal as a resource of choice for creative learning in the city and the region.

Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau screening is essential for this post.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To work closely with the Education Manager, Marketing, Production, and Front of House departmentsin developing links between the Theatre Royal and education institutions, in Plymouth and the region; creating networks and developing relationships.
  1. To develop and produce projects, including partnership building, monitoring and evaluation.
  1. To act as an advocate for the Theatre and for the Department’s work and to represent the Theatre at relevant meetings, conferences and events.
  1. To ensure compliance with all company policies, particularly Equal Opportunities and Child Protection.

PRINCIPAL TASKS

  1. To maintain up to date specialist knowledge in the field of formal education, ensuring that all activities support the curriculum and recognise current government policy.
  1. To manage relevant project budgets in close consultation with the Education Manager.
  1. To monitor and evaluate all work within your remit in order to advise future projects and developments.
  1. To recruit and manage freelance practitioners, trainees and volunteersas appropriate ensuring that quality of practice is maintained at all times.
  1. To deputise for the Education Manager when necessary.
  1. To develop and manage the theatre’s Work Experience programme – including day, week and longer term placement opportunities within the organisation.
  1. To support the Education Manager in producing and delivering the Participate and Activate programmes, particularly developing and coordinating Post Show Talks.
  1. To work with the Education Manager to create innovative learning resources connected with Theatre Royal and Drum Theatre productions, including on-line resources.
  1. To collaborate with the Education Manager and the Marketing Department on identifying PR opportunities and to undertake copy-writing, proofreading and image collation as required regarding opportunities for schools and colleges at the Theatre Royal.
  1. To work collaboratively with all other members of the department to integrate the different areas of its work, sharing resources and developing opportunities where appropriate.
  1. Where practical, to provide services to other departments of the Theatre as may be requested from time to time.
  1. To work unsociable hours as required.
  1. To carry out any other reasonable duties that may be requested from time to time.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

ESSENTIAL

  • Knowledge of and commitment to theatre and related artforms
  • Knowledge of the curriculum and understanding of the formal education environment
  • An appreciation of current trends and practice in this field
  • Commitment to young people and their development
  • A substantial understanding of and commitment to Equal Opportunities and Child Protection

DESIRABLE

  • An understanding and appreciation of freelance artists, their needs and requirements
  • An understanding of the subsidised theatre sector
  • An understanding of the working of charities, trusts and foundations.
  • An understanding of the workings a large producing Theatre
