CATEGORY I: THE ARTS

ART ON-THE-SPOT
Theme: 6 feet Below and Beyond

Participants will have the first day of the tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to complete their projects. The final pieces must relate to the overall SIST 2013 Theme as stated above. Brainstorming, planning (sketches) and buying the necessary materials must be done before the beginning of the tournament. Acceptable mediums include, but are not limited to: watercolors, oil, crayon, mixed mediums, chalk, pastels, charcoal.
Competition Guidelines:

  1. No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition. This competition is NOT a team effort. Each participant must submit a separate piece of artwork.
  2. Depiction of human or animal figures not allowed in any form except for silhouettes or shadows. Plants, landscapes, and inanimate objects are allowed.
  3. All artwork must be clearly labeled on the back with the name of the participant, institution and team.
  4. Participants must purchase and bring all necessary materials, from pencils to paper, themselves. No more than Rs. 1000 can be spent on supplies. Please note that the SIST Staff will not provide any supplies to participants. Failure to bring your own material will lead to disqualification.
  5. While you are working on your artwork during Day 1 (9 am - 3 pm) judges will come to see your technique, inspiration and guide you in the right direction. During this time, a short typed / hand-written explanation of the artwork, not more than 1 A4 size page (500 words max.) must be submitted. The explanation should include what the artwork is about and what inspired the participant to make it.
  6. On day 2, each participant will be interviewed for five minutes by the judge in order to describe the purpose and inspiration of the artwork. (Make sure your artwork is dry before submitting it to the judges.)
  7. This competition will be judged according to the SIST ARTS JUDGING BALLOT.
  8. If any participant would like to take their artwork back with them then they should inform the event managers any time before the competition is over; otherwise it will automatically be assumed that the participant has surrendered possession of their artwork to the SIST Committee.
    PLEASE NOTE: No requests for return of the artwork will be entertained after the competition is over. The work will be considered abandoned property and ownership rights will be transferred to the SIST Committee.

3D ART

THEME: 6 FEET BELOW AND BEYOND
Competition guidelines:

All submissions must be three-dimensional (in the literal sense). Graphic designing is not included in this category.

  1. No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition. This competition is NOT a team effort. Each participant must submit a separate piece of artwork. No more than Rs. 1000 can be spent on supplies.
  1. Artwork CANNOT take the form of humans or animals. Plants, landscapes, and inanimate objects such as buildings etc., are allowed, however ready-made models taken from shops will not be entertained.
  1. Artwork should also be placed on a board for easy carrying. The board should be made of a material sturdy enough to carry the artwork. Participants will be responsible for bringing their own boards. The SIST Staff will not provide boards or any other material to participants on the day of the tournament.
  1. All artwork must be labeled with the name of the participant, institution and team.
  1. 3D art should be sturdy. Judges are looking for artwork that is well put together. Please note that your work may be moved around on several occasions and it should be robust to handle this. The SIST Staff will not be responsible for any damage caused during the transportation of artwork or under any other circumstances. Projects will be judged as they are presented to the judges regardless of any damage incurred to a participant’s work.
  1. A short typed/written explanation must be submitted (max 500 words). The explanation should include what the artwork is about and what inspired the participant to make it.
  1. This competition will be judged according to the SIST ARTS JUDGING BALLOT.
  1. If any participant would like to take their artwork back with them, they should inform the event managers any time before the competition is over; otherwise it will automatically be assumed that the participant has surrendered possession of their artwork to the SIST Committee.

Category I: The ArtsPoster Competition

Guidelines for the competitors

  1. No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition. This competition is NOT a team effort. Each participant must submit a separate piece of work.
  2. Poster should be on paper, of min. _ __22 x 28 inches__ and max. ___24 x 36 inches_ dimensions.
  3. Means of drawing/painting: pencil, crayon, water color, oil painting, computer drawing, etc. Depiction of human or animal figures not allowed in any form except for silhouettes or shadows
  4. Posters should be 2 dimensional only (no elevation allowed).
  5. The poster must not represent any particular organization or brand name.
  6. The topic of your poster should be clearly stated on it. Here are a few ideas for the topic of poster but you are not restricted to these.
  • Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you deny?
  • Islamic Spain and its downfall
  • Omar Bin khattab (R.A) (or other companions)
  • Salah : Karate against all Sins/ Your personal defense kit
  • Battle of Badr and lessons learnt.
  1. Each Poster must be labeled with the name of the participant, institution and team.
  2. The poster should be submitted on DAY 1 of the Tournament, failure to do so will lead to disqualification from the competition.
  3. Please submit a brief description of the piece and method of execution, which may be considered during judging.
  4. If any participant would like to take their poster back with them then they should inform the event managers any time before the competition is over; otherwise it will automatically be assumed that the participant has surrendered possession of their poster to the SIST Committee.

Stories for Young Hearts

The objectives of this competition are to help young kids understand their Deen in way that they love the most: STORY BOOKS. A list of topics is given below but the participants are not restricted to these:

 To teach young kids the application of moral values e.g. how a person who did not cheat in exams but trusted in Allah was able to get a better score than the person who cheated.

 Pleasing your parents; helping out others; being productive both in deen and dunya

 Concept of Shaitan

 Concept of sharing and how Allah multiplies the reward when you give something away in His cause

Guidelines for Competitors:

  1. Only one entry per team is allowed.
  2. Entry can be made either by a single person or in a group of two.
  3. All submissions should be in PDF form.
  4. All Entries must be emailed to two weeks prior to the event i.e. before 28th January.
  5. The story must be no longer than 4000 words and should be previously unpublished.
  6. The story book should be suitable for children aged between 4-12 years.
  7. The story book must not represent any particular organization or brand name.
  8. Depiction of human or animal figures not allowed in any form except for silhouettes or shadows.
  9. Theme of story : Prism of Values
  10. Title of the storybook can be of the participant’s choice.

CATEGORY I: THE ARTS
CALLIGRAPHY

THEME: 6 FEET BELOW AND BEYOND
Guidelines for Competitors:

  1. No more than 2 students from each team can register for this competition. The competition is NOT a team effort. Each participant must submit a separate piece of work.
  2. All artwork must be submitted on paper (there is no restriction on the type of paper used), which should not exceed 22 by 28 inches (standard chart paper size) or be less than the standard A4 size. The use of frames is optional and entirely up to the participants. SIST managers will not provide frames to display the artwork.
  3. No more than 5 ayahs may be calligraphed. All final pieces must be labeled with the name of the competitor, institution and team.
  4. The calligraphy piece MUST reflect this year’s SIST theme: 6 Feet Below and Beyond. All entries are to be submitted on the 9th of February (first day of event).
  5. Participants’ artwork can include pictures or designs to compliment the calligraphic work (as long as they do not depict any human or animal figures); however the calligraphic work should be the main focus of the artwork.
  6. Any artwork that emphasizes designs or pictures over the calligraphy will not be eligible for the competition.
  7. Participants should to use known Arabic calligraphic scripts (e.g Nastaleeq, Thuluth, Naskh, Kufic, Ruqa’h, etc.) for their artwork. The Calligraphic scripts must display uniformity, proportionality and consistency of lettering in accordance with the original Quranic text.
  8. Participants will be expected to give a brief overview of their artwork to the judge or the event manager. The judge or event manager will also ask them questions pertaining to their artwork in order ensure authenticity and that the participant is indeed the artist of the artwork presented.
  9. The participants, and especially the winners, are encouraged to submit their artwork to the event managers after the competition is over if they are interested in having their work put on permanent display on the college premises. This is by no means mandatory, however.
  10. Each competitor must display the following next to his or her piece on a separate piece of paper:
  11. Translation of the writing in the calligraphy piece.
  12. Short typed/written explanation of the calligraphy, not more than ONE page long (max. 500 words). The explanation should include the inspiration behind the meaning and form of the artist’s piece.
  13. If any participant would like to take their artwork back with them, they should inform the event managers any time before the competition is over; otherwise it will automatically be assumed that the participant has surrendered possession of their artwork to the SIST Committee. PHOTOGRAHY

The purpose of this category is to encourage artistic expression of Islamic concepts, teachings and thoughts through the medium of a camera.
THEME: 6 FEET BELOW AND BEYOND
The following is a list of rules and procedures for this competition. Failure to fulfill these obligations and/or any violation of them may result in point loss or disqualification from the tournament.

Guidelines for Competitors:

  1. Be as creative as possible, but please ensure your photography conforms to Islamic guidelines. Depiction of human or animal figures not allowed in any form except for silhouettes or shadows. Please use your best judgment, and if in doubt, send an email to for approval of your ideas. Abstract photography is definitely encouraged. Have fun with it!
  1. Maximum 2 members per team are allowed to participate in this event. This competition is not a joint effort. Each competitor must submit his/her own separate piece of work.
  1. You may bring photos that you have taken in the past or take new photos just for this competition.
  1. Please limit your submissions to 1 photo per person (size 8X10), unless you choose to submit small photos (e.g. 5x7’’), in which case, you can bring up to 2.
  1. All artwork must be properly labeled with the name of the participants, institution and team.
  1. All entries are to be submitted on the 9th February (first day of event). A written/typed explanation (not more than one A4 page) of the photograph MUST be submitted with the photograph.
  1. TIP FROM THE JUDGES: Stick to the theme, consider different angles and heights etc while taking your photograph.
  1. Editing of the pictures is not allowed. Remember enlarging a picture may cause it to become grainy and lose detail, so keep the quality of your work in mind while enlarging your picture.
  1. If participants would like to take their artwork back with them then they should inform the event managers any time before the competition is over; otherwise it will automatically be assumed that the participant has surrendered possession of their artwork to the SIST Committee.

CATEGORY I: THE ARTSANASHEED [Brothers’ & Sisters’]

Anasheed is vocal music sung in praise of Allah 'Azza wa Jall, his Prophet (peace be upon him), or has a good message that is either sung a cappella (voice only) or accompanied by percussion instrument called the daff. The purpose of this competition is to educate the youth about the teachings of Islam through one of society’s most influential mediums and allow them to produce aesthetically pleasing acoustics in conformity with Islam.
There will be separate competitions for brothers and sisters. Hence, your Nasheed group must either be all male or all female. All competitors must be prepared to perform in front of an audience.
Males will be kept out of the Sisters Anasheed performance; however, the brothers’ performance will be open to all viewers, irrespective of gender.

THEME: 6 FEET BELOW AND BEYOND

GUIDELINES FOR COMPETITORS:

  1. Nasheed groups may consist of a MINIMUM OF 1 AND A MAXIMUM OF 4 MEMBERS. All members of a group must be from the same SIST team.
  2. MAXIMUM 2 performances are allowed per team.
    These 2 performances can be:
    Solo and Solo, or
    Solo and Group, or
    Group and Group.
    The choice is open. Each group however cannot be more than 4 members
  1. The Nasheed can be in ENGLISH, URDU OR ARABIC. It must have relevance to the theme. Though extra points will be awarded for original compositions, participants may perform the work of another artist/Nasheed-writer given that they mention this point to the judges before their performance. Anasheed discovered to be plagiarized which were stated by the participants to be their own composition will result in the team’s disqualification from competition.
  1. Each group will be required to perform their anasheed in front of an audience. The performance should not exceed 4 minutes. Points will be deducted from the total score if the performance exceeds the allotted time.
  1. The ONLY instrument that can be used for the performance is the daff (a one-sided drum). Remember to be creative! Non-instrumental sound effects such as clapping, humming etc are permitted. Groups must bring their own props as none will be supplied by the SIST management.
  1. The lyrics of the anasheed must be submitted at least 1 week before the start of the tournament for approval by the SIST Committee, along with a short, typed explanation (about half a page long) about why the Nasheed was composed/selected.

Competitors must submit copies of their anasheed to the Judge(s) before performance. No MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS ALLOWED EXCEPT DUFF.

The judges’ decision will be final.
