Centre for the Humanities Fellowships

Call for applications

The Centre for the Humanities (CfH) is a platform where pioneering, innovative research is connected to greater socio-political relevance of the Humanities by focussing on the social status and the public perception of the Humanities today. In corporation with various partners and networks, the CfH organizes various symposia, lectures and seminars. Within these activities, the CfH stands not only for an interdisciplinary approach to the humanities, but also for the will to interconnect the academic and the civic and organize events that address a broad audience.

Introduction

The CfH offers two types of fellowship schemes: The internal and the external. For both schemes, the centre offers a place where fellows can concentrate on their research, whilstmaking use of the Centre’s vibrant intellectual climate (testing their theses in internal meetings, for instance), and adding to that climate (e.g. by organising a symposium, a lecture series, or a small conference on behalf of the Centre). Applicant’s projects need to show interdisciplinary qualities and/or develop new perspectives on the humanities and methodology. However, individual calls may encourage a different emphasis. It is advised that the prospective Fellow studies the activities and aims of the Centre before applying (

Internal Fellowship

Sabbatical Fellowships

Eligible for this fellowship is staff of UtrechtUniversity who have sabbatical or externally funded leave and whose research project is connected with one of the CfH’s projects. It is expected that the internal Fellows will mostly use the Centre for finishing a manuscript in the peace and quiet of an environment that is solely dedicated to research. It is thus of the greatest importance that when at the Centre, whatever plays at their institution is as far away as possible.

External Fellowship

Non-stipendiary Post-doc Fellowship

The CfH offers a number of non-stipendiary post-doc Fellowships of a minimum of three months duration. Office accommodation and research facilities are provided by the CfH in a postdoctoral suite. There are opportunities to participate in and design seminars and workshops, and to collaborate with colleagues working in similar areas of research. The CfH particularly encourages interdisciplinary collaboration.

Non-stipendiary Senior Research Fellowships

Established Dutch scholars who have reached the age of retirement and whose profile fits the platform of the CFH may seek affiliation with the CFH in order to pursue their research. The fellows are allocated an office at the CfH and play an active role in the research, training and knowledge transfer activities of the CFH.

Application and Selection procedure

The Centre issues calls for applicants approximately twice a year and aims at hosting four to five Fellows at one time. Applications are reviewed and assessed by the Centre’s governing body and advisory boards.

Although the CfH will officially invite the Fellow with a letter, it is the responsibility of the Fellow to discuss her/ his stay at the CfH with her/his home institution. It is known in advance for how long the Fellow will stay at the CfH, although extensions may be possible in some cases. A contract, which states the responsibilities of the parties involved, will be made for each individual Fellow. For all Fellows, the CfH covers overhead (office facilities, incl. computer, printing, stationary, internet access, secretarial assistance et cetera), and is engaged in project supervision. Either the director of the CfH or a well-chosen person from the CfH’s network supervises the Fellow. The director of the CfH and the Fellow in question will choose the supervisor together. The supervisor is based in Utrecht.
