Job Summary

Processes all received banana product, including receiving, ensuring orders meet quality control standards, ripening product for sale and selecting product to be shipped out to the stores. In the absence of the DC Quality Control Supervisor, this position will perform Quality Control inspections of inbound produce loads, daily walks, and respond to quality related questions from warehouse employees and buyers. Perform other related duties.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspects daily inbound banana shipments for quality, freshness and conditions utilizing appropriate quality control testing methods such as visual, temperature and cutting as well as physical conditions such as dehydration, stem rot and bruising.
  • Coordinates rejection of any inbound shipment that falls below established quality control standards, including the documentation and return of product. Communicates with the buying office in regards to rejected orders.
  • Receives product that has met the quality control check, accurately checks and counts product, ensures all documentation is correct and verifies description, UPC, quality, quantity, labeling, etc. corresponds with the Bill of Lading and Purchase Order. Documents discrepancies properly.
  • Scans product for inventory placement and monitors inventory information maintained in computer system. Utilizes forklifts to correctly place product in banana rooms to ensure proper airflow within rooms.
  • Writes a ripening schedule for multiple banana rooms according to established ripening process. Tracks and charts ripening progression throughout the process; utilizes the computerized room monitoring system to identify temperature, humidity, etc. issues. Responds to alarms and addresses issues quickly.
  • Maintains generator with Ethylene; refilling as needed. Follows safe handling guidelines in accordance to MSDS and OSHA guidelines.
  • Selects orders according to store requests, places items on a pallet ensuring product integrity, stability and safety. Stages completed pallets at assigned dock doors for shipment.
  • Ensures that all safety procedures and policies are followed; complying with OSHA standards. Maintains a clean, neat and orderly work area.
  • In the absence of the DC Quality Control Supervisor:
  • Oversee Quality Control inspections during the receiving and unloading of inbound produce and produce product shipments.
  • Inspect daily inbound produce shipments for quality and freshness utilizing appropriate testing methods such as visual, temperature, cutting, tasting, pressure tests and brix (sugar) in a cold storage environment.
  • Ensure WinCo Foods grading, and specification standards are met along with USDA and FDA standards on all accepted shipments of produce. Read and interpret quality control manuals specifying federal guidelines for produce quality and acceptance.
  • Coordinate rejection of any inbound shipment that falls below established quality standards, including documentation, return of product and billing credits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate initiative and self-direction, working independently without immediate supervision.
  • Prioritize and perform a variety of simultaneous tasks (multi-tasking), effectively managing time to ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Work in a variety of environments which include concrete floors,varied temperatures and high humidity in chilled areas to ambient non-air conditioned warehouse areas.
  • Conduct visual inspections, read reports, computer printouts, screen, etc.
  • Work various shifts and days in a 24/7 operation; including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Complete necessary training and certification to safely and efficiently operate required equipment including powered industrial forklifts, powered pallet jacks, shrink-wrap machines and radio frequency computer terminals.
  • Stand, walk and move rapidly throughout a shift.
  • Bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently.
  • Reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 50 lbs. frequently and 80-100 lbs. occasionally, within the range of floor level to overhead.
  • Learn and memorize warehouse physical layout and operating procedures.
  • Perform basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) quickly and accurately; visualize and calculate quantities in three dimensional stacked arrangements (tie and tier); calculate proper distribution of weights and volumes within a trailer while loading.
  • Utilize strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail in order to effectively monitor progress and complete assignments.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal (hearing & speech) and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Exhibit manual dexterity, hand/eye coordination, and depth perception.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with co-workers, supervisors, vendors and others.
  • Perform primary duties safely with efficiency and accuracy.

Machines and Equipment Operated:

  • Forklift, Electric Pallet Jack.
  • Hand held radio frequency computer devices.
  • Computer terminal, office equipment (telephone, fax, copier, scanner, etc.), Radio Frequency (RF) guns and other devices.
