1. IDENTIFICATION OF JOB

JOB TITLE - Attenborough’s ACE Project Officer (0.8 FTE)

RESPONSIBLE FOR - Volunteers

2. OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

To co-ordinate, deliver and promote a heritage-based, access, community outreach and education programme of improvements for Attenborough Nature Reserve, Attenborough Nature Centre and the Erewash Valley Living Landscape area.

This will involve co-ordination, delivery and involvement on a wide range of improvements planned for Attenborough Nature Reserve including elements of innovative interpretation, an oral histories project, new activities on and off site, outreach activities, sustainable transport and habitat creation works. The post holder will play a central role to the coordination of the team that will install numerous high quality improvements to the reserve, and champion the site’s ability to engage everybody with wildlife.

3. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Delivery of Access, Community and Education Programmes:

a)  Co-ordinating the delivery of the Wildlife Trust’s Attenborough’s ACE Project, working with the wider team comprised of staff from Attenborough, Estates, Communications and Marketing, Education and Community, Development and the Community Ranger;

b)  Devising and co-ordinating a community outreach programme aimed at attracting underrepresented audiences to the reserve and providing progression opportunities to existing visitors, identifying and establishing potential long term partnerships with external organisations. This will be linked in with the NWT events programme;

c)  Delivering and promoting a comprehensive oral histories project linked to the reserve, engaging all audiences and publicising Attenborough ‘Lost’ heritage;

d)  Leading on a sustainable transport project for the reserve, working with stakeholders, transport providers, local residents and the public to encourage behaviour change to increase numbers of visitors using alternatives to the car;

e)  Recruiting and managing a team of volunteers to assist in the delivery of the ACE programmes;

f)  Providing advice and information to all supporting teams to ensure all delivery meets ACE objectives;

g)  Co-ordinating with the Conservation team and Community Ranger in the development of community outreach and environmental education opportunities in the Erewash Valley Living Landscape area;

h)  Evaluating and monitoring progress of the ACE Project, ensuring all learning is shared within the Wildlife Trust

i)  Acting as an Ambassador for the ACE Project.

External Relationships:

j)  Maintaining and developing contacts with community and stakeholder contacts and keeping them informed of project progress;

k)  Establishing relationships with new partner organisations to support project delivery and progress towards project objectives and the wider objectives of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

Finance and Administration:

l)  Providing high quality project management and reporting of externally funded programmes;

m)  Taking responsibility for risk assessment and the health and safety of Attenborough‘s ACE improvements.

Human Resources:

n)  Providing full line management support to volunteers in accordance with the Volunteer Policy;

o)  Contributing to the development and implementation of Attenborough’s Volunteer Policies and procedures.

JOB SPECIFICATION

The post holder will work closely with several teams at the Wildlife Trust, predominantly the Attenborough, Estates, Education and Community, Conservation, Development, Communication and Marketing Teams as well as the People and Wildlife Committee and the Attenborough’s ACE Community Ranger and other staff at Attenborough Nature Reserve.

Given the seven-day a week operation of the facilities, the Attenborough’s ACE Project Officer will be required to adopt a flexible work programme and to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays as necessary. Working hours will be managed flexibly to reflect this requirement and the Trust operates a system of discretionary leave for additional hours worked.

Attendance at team and staff meetings in Nottingham is expected, together with attendance at other Trust meetings as required. The post holder will also contribute towards maintaining central filing systems and records.

Due to the nature of this role the post holder will come into contact with sensitive data and information and will be expected to respect absolutely the confidentiality of all information available to them and operate in accordance with The Wildlife Trust’s policies and procedures.

As this post will entail working with children, young people and vulnerable adults it is subject to an enhanced CRB disclosure.

A full driving licence is required as the post-holder will often need to travel within the county. The post holder will be expected to have a vehicle available for use on Trust business for which the Trust will pay mileage.

In order for the organisation to work effectively the post holder may be required to assist with other areas of work and therefore should be prepared to undertake other duties appropriate to the post as delegated.

All staff are required to abide by organisational policies and procedures. This includes promoting and acting as an ambassador for the Trust.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Area A EXPERIENCE

·  Two years experience of delivering visitor experience/engagement improvements at a large nature reserve, heritage site or similar setting.

·  Track record in encouraging school, community and individual participation in managed programmes and events.

·  Promotional marketing or communications experience.

·  Involvement in the design and production and selection of accessible features and interpretation at a visitor attraction.

·  Managing, motivating and involving staff and volunteers.

·  Coordinating large scale externally funded projects.

Area B KNOWLEDGE

·  A degree or similar qualification/experience – ideally in conservation or similar environmental topic including Ecology / Biology / Natural Heritage.

·  A teaching qualification or similar is desirable.

·  Understanding of barriers facing young people, families from deprived areas, BME communities in accessing nature.

·  Understanding of the value of heritage.

·  Project management principles.

·  Knowledge of the National Curriculum requirements from foundation to key stage 4 level.

·  An understanding of the issues involved in working with young people, including Health and Safety regulations.

Area C SKILLS

·  Ability to establish good professional relationships.

·  Strong presentation and persuasion skills.

·  A professional approach to working with young people, diverse and under-represented groups and volunteers, including consultation and negotiation skills.

·  Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
