This role requires absolute discretion and confidentiality at all times.

Responsible for: The deputy play leader works with the play leader to ensure the welfare of the children and the efficient day to day operation of the playgroup in accordance with the legal and statutory requirements, aims and policies of little rainbows playgroup. In the absence of the playgroup leader the deputy assumes full responsibility.

Responsible to: Play Leader and Committee

Administrative duties

•To assist the play leader in keeping a daily register and relevant records, including registration documents, accident and incident book details, and fire drill records.

•To contribute to planning, undertake observations and assessments and to evaluate children’s progress, keeping children’s learning journeys up to date.

Staff duties

•To deputise for the play leader as required.

•To provide a high quality of care, to assist the play leader in ensuring that staff are properly deployed and offer appropriate stimulation to support the children.

•To help with the supervision of the session, and any special activities and events.

•To challenge sex, class, racial, and religious discrimination.

•To attend relevant training and to up-date training for first aid and child protection when necessary.

•To liaise with parents regarding the progress of their child.

•To keep up-to-date with the latest ideas in childcare through appropriate training courses and relevant publications.

•To assist the play leader in ensuring the room is prepared for the arrival of the children by the start of the session and that the room is left clean and tidy after the children have left.

•To attend committee and staff meetings.

•To contribute to and implement policies.

•To liaise with and support the SENCO.

Duties towards children:

•To support all children in the setting, offering appropriate learning experiences in line with the EYFS.

•To be a positive practice role model.

•To help with organising a wide range of stimulating and safe activities throughout the session, including play to promote positive attitudes and equal opportunities.

•To be aware of the differing needs of a wide range of children and be able to meet those needs.

•To help supervise and support the children, ensuring a correct adult to child ratio.

•To ensure that unacceptable behaviour is dealt with in accordance with the policies and procedures of the setting.

•To encourage positive behaviour.

•To ensure that playgroup is a safe environment for children, equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, and safety procedures are implemented at all times.

•To assist with toileting, nappy changing, and personal care of the children.

Other duties

•To arrive at 8:45am to help set up the activities before opening, and to stay to clear up after the session, and contribute to staff meetings regarding planning, assessments, SEN, and children’s learning journeys.

•Check equipment and premises are kept in good order and report any concerns to the play leader, helping with the risk assessment.
