Supervisory responsibility: / The postholder may be responsible for the deployment and supervision of the work of other teachers and support staff relevant to their responsibilities
General duties:
- To contribute to the strategic development of the School as a member of the Senior Leadership Team
- To lead Special Educational Needs provision in the school
- To lead provision for more able pupils
- To line manage the SERF Unit staff
- To be lead teacher for Safeguarding and Looked After Children within school
- To carry out the duties of a class teacher when required
Specific duties and responsibilities
Qualities and Knowledge
- Motivate and work with others to ensure a shared commitment to the vision and values of the school
- Assist the Principal with the strategic development of Inclusion policy and provision
- Demonstrate high standards of personal integrity, loyalty, discretion and professionalism
- Develop positive relationships and attitudes towards pupils, staff, parents and governors
- Lead by example as an excellent classroom practitioner and inspire and motivate other staff
Pupils and staff
- Have ambitious standards for all pupils
- Support the identification of and disseminate the most effective teaching approaches for pupils with SEN and more able pupils
- Collect and interpret assessment data to inform practice
- Track the progress and standards of more able children and those with SEN, and hold staff accountable through monitoring and performance management
- Co-ordinate Annual Reviews and attend / chair when necessary
- Lead 6-monthly SEN Review meetings for SEN children in school
- Teach groups or classes as required
Systems and processes
- Support staff to ensure the needs of children with Special Educational Needs are met through early identification and effective planning
- Take the roles of Designated Safeguarding Lead and Lead Teacher for Looked After Children, liaising with other Safeguarding professionals in the school, SERF and Children’s Centre and ensuring the effective use of the online child protection monitoring system
- Lead the provision for Social, Emotional and Mental Health in school and line manage the SERF Unit staff, the Behaviour Mentors and all SEN staff in school
- Ensure the school environment is safe, calm and well-ordered, taking the lead role in behaviour management throughout school
- Carry out the administration of non-routine pupil admissions, liaising with the local authority, parents and pupils to ensure a smooth transition into school
- To lead the process of transition to secondary schools
- Contribute to the performance management process through acting as a Reviewer for teaching and support staff
- Advise on and contribute to the professional development of staff, including whole school INSET provision
- Deploy staff and resources efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of the more able and SEN pupils
The self-improving school system
- Develop effective relationships with other agencies and professionals to support provision for pupils with SEN, including Educational Diversity, Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language practitioners, CAMHS and Headstart
- Be willing to learn from, and share knowledge with, staff working in other schools, especially other members of the Fylde Coast Academy Trust
Other professional requirements
- Hold, or be prepared to study for, the National Award for SEN Co-ordination
