“jesus is the lamb of god”

John 1:29 – 34

March 22, 2017

1) Jesus died on the cross to take away just one sin: the sin of disobedience. [true] or [f]

·  Sermon yes! Jesus died to forgive the world of “original sin.” The sin of Adam and Eve was their disobedience to God’s commandment in the Garden of Eden concerning the “fruit.”

·  Genesis 3:6 > “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”

·  John 3:16 > “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

·  Sermon However, Jesus also died to cleanse believers of their daily sins.

·  1John 1:9 > “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

2) John baptized Jesus to identify Jesus with the “repent and kingdom” message. [true] or [f]

·  Sermon yes! The people were flocking to John the Baptist because of his message, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” John baptized those individuals who identified themselves with the message of repentance. John needed to baptize Jesus, not unto repentance, but to identify Jesus with the Kingdom message. The people tied Jesus and John together in this single message.

·  Matthew 3:13-15 “Then come Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and come thou to me? 15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becomes us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him.”

·  Sermon > Jesus’ baptism illustrates what He would endure on the cross when he would die as the sacrificial Lamb of God. Jesus fulfills the righteousness of Scripture by purposefully identifying with John’ baptism. Baptism by immersion provides the perfect picture of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.

3) Explain the phrase “Lamb of God” and where it might be found in Scripture.

______

______

______

·  Sermon > The phrase “Lamb of God” refers to the sacrificial lamb and the substitute offering who has come to atonement for the sin of the world. As the Lamb of God, only Jesus has the power and the authority to forgive sin or to take away sin or to lift sin.

·  Sermon > The phrase “Lamb of God” takes us back to the Garden of Eden where in Genesis 3, God sacrifices the Lamb [slain at the foundation of the world] in order to provide clothing to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve.

·  Genesis 3:21 > “The Lord God made coats of skins for Adam and his wife Eve, and clothed them.”

·  Sermon > The phrase “Lamb of God” also takes us back to Mount Mariah where in Genesis 22, Abraham is about to sacrifice his son Isaac as the Lamb on the altar of faith.

·  Genesis 22:8 > “My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.”

·  Sermon > The phrase “Lamb of God” also takes us back to Goshen in Egypt where in Exodus 12, Moses instructs the children of Israel how to prepare the Lamb for the upcoming Passover.

·  Exodus 12:13 > “And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.”

4) Explain what happened immediately following Jesus’ baptism.

______

______

______

·  Sermon > The Baptizer had been told by God that when this prearranged sign of the dove would occur the Person so marked out by the Holy Spirit’s coming and presence would indeed be the One who would baptize believers with that same Holy Spirit.

·  Sermon > The Gospel of John does not provide the details of Jesus’ actual baptism, only alluding to the fact that it happened. However, all three of the synoptic gospels proclaim the celebration of Jesus’ baptism.

·  Matthew 13:16-17 > “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

·  Mark 1:10-11> “And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: 11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

·  Luke 3:21-22 > “Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”

5) When did Jesus become Christ, The Messiah?

[a] At Birth [b] At Baptism [c] At the Cross [e] None of the Above

·  Sermon > Jesus did not become Christ at baptism or at any other historical time-event. Jesus is Christ from eternity. That is, Jesus is the Son of God, the Word of God, the Lamb of God, Christ-Messiah, the Holy One of Israel.

·  v1-2 > “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God.”
