Dear Parishioners,

40 Hours + Eucharistic Exposition

Our annual 40 Hours will be held this week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (March 4th, 5th, and 6th.)

This 40 Hours, during this Year of Faith, is an opportunity for our Eucharistic Faith to be enriched. Jesus invites us to communion with him so that we may feast on his love. We have come to know and to believe that the Eucharistic Presence of Jesus nourishes, supports, sustains, and energizes our hearts and souls.

The Eucharist will be in Exposition from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM each day in the Church. (Should there be a funeral the Exposition will be moved to the Chapel in the SpiritualityCenter until the Funeral is over.)

This 40 Hours will be made special by the preaching of Father Dan Dwyer (formerly known as Deacon Dwyer) on Tuesday and Father David Fernandes (Wednesday) who formerly served at Saint Anselm. Father Jack Kolodziej, an Oblate Priest from Father JudgeHigh Schoolwill preach on Monday.

Lenten Almsgiving

Lenten Coin Folders: Monies saved through your Lenten sacrifices may be placed in the Lenten coin folders. The money will benefit Saint Anselm School to offset deficit spending. The Coin Folders are available on the tables with the bulletins.

Poor Boxes: Monies received in the Poor Box are used by our Saint Vincent de Paul Society which responds to the needs of people in our community.

2013 Catholic Charities Appeal

Through the Catholic Charities Appeal, we are called to be attentive to people in need to show care for them. Individually, we can do a little; together, as a Church, we can do much.

As a Church, we “do” Catholic Charities because we are Catholic. We seek to imitate Jesus who served and responded to the needs of all who came to him.

Everyone is asked to help the Church respond to the need and reach the funding goal of $10 million dollars.

For those who have contributed in the past, the Church is most grateful and asks you to contribute again this year. For those who have never contributed, I ask you to try to do so this year. For us to reach our goal and impact the lives of so many, we need everyone to do their share. With a heart like Jesus whose love supported and graced the lives of so many, we can do the same.

Please note that this year’s appeal is being conducted as a “mail-in” appeal. Please use the envelope you received and mail it. Thank you.

LENTEN SCRUTINY

(Examination of Conscience)

Our RCIA Elect will celebrate the first of three scrutiny rites this weekend during the 10:00 AM Mass.

These scrutiny rites are a way that the Church seeks to introduce these people into our way of examining our conscience. Many Catholics examine their consciences not only before going to confession but each evening before praying an act of contrition.

Scrutiny means to examine closely. During Lent, we ask God to help us take a close look at our lives and to help us see (1) what is upright and good within them so that they may be strengthened by God’s grace, and (2) to see what is weak, defective, and sinful in them so that these areas of their lives may be healed, fixed, and forgiven by the Lord’s life-giving mercy.

Shadow Program – Saint Anselm School

Saint Anselm School has a “Shadow Program” whereby students in grades 1 to 7 from other schools may visit a particular grade for the day. The purpose of this program is to allow children from other schools to visit us to see if they would like to become part of our student body. If your child has a friend in our school, and he/she would like to visit our school for a day and be in the same class as his/her friend, we would be very happy to have your child visit us. We welcome children who do not have friends in our school as well.

To arrange a “Shadow Day” at our school, please call the office at 215-632-1133. If you have any questions regarding this program, please call Mrs. Murphy at 215-632-1133.

God bless you,

Father Dunleavy

+ Saint Anselm Parish Pastoral Report 2012 +

Every January, after the calendar year ends, the Pastors of the Archdiocese are required to give a Pastoral Report to the Archbishop. It includes the following:

20122011 2010 2009 2008 20071996 1988

Total number of parishioners8,373 8.192 7,938 8,057 7,953 8,087 11,855 12,981

Total number of families2,872 2,883 2,984 2,889 2,876 2,851 3,250 3,146

Total number of single-person households 467 461 467 467 467 464 275 NA

Total number of mixed-faith households 385 310 415 363 331 329

Observations:Throughout the years, Saint Anselm Parish has consistently numbered about 3,000 families. What has changed is the number of parishioners. The difference is because there are less children but still the same number of families. Houses where there were once 2, 3, 4, or 5 children are now “empty nests” with only adults there.

October Count

In cooperation with the Archdiocesan Office for Research and Planning, the number of people attending each Mass was counted during October. Seating Capacity of the church is 616 people.

Vincentian Message…

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but, more important, to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.

Your gift in the St. Vincent DePaul Poor Box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.
