Horsham Cycling Club Breaks new ground in inclusive participation at the Annual Club Track Carnival.

ALEADINGVictorian cycling official believes a successful trial to allow Horsham junior hand cyclist Jannik Blair to compete against mainstream cyclists this week has broken new ground.

CycleSport Victoria senior handicapper and board member Laurie Norris saidthe experimental handicap events at Horsham's Wimmera Wheelrace carnival had the potential to open new avenues in the sport.

``For anything to happen it would have to go through CycleSport Victoria and the Australian Cycling Federation and there is a danger of opening a can of worms because of things such as safety and insurance. But it might also be something worth pursuing.

There are a lot of possibilities and plenty you could do with it,'' he said.

Mr Norris, chief commissaire at the Horsham carnival, said some officials had been less than comfortable with the idea considering it wasthe first racing of its kind in Australia. But he had embraced it as a new and exciting concept.

``I thought it was well worth the effort and certainly gave it my blessing,'' he said.

``I was lucky enough to meet Jannik and after speaking to him and looking over his hand cycle I realised there were no problems at all.

``He's a fantastic kid with great spirit but at the same time I treated him like any bike rider in the race. It would have been wrong to do otherwise.''

Jannik Blair, 13, who lost the use of his legs in a farm accident, started his first 1000-metre race off a handicap of 300 metres but the field caught and passed him quickly and he finished last.

Mr Norris, taking an educated punt based on years of handicap experience at all levels of racing, pushed him forward to 450 metres for his second race, a move that proved a winner.

Blair led the field in front of a cheering crowd until the last 20 metres and eventually finished 10th, achieving a goal to `not finish last'. Nicholas Rix from Bendigo won the event, needing to ride a tactically clever race to not only reel in Blair but to also

beat his able-bodied opponents.

``I managed to pull one out with his mark and it was a fantastic race. The kids, their fathers and coaches all seemed to embrace it,'' Mr Norris said.

``The few people who had the gumption to go ahead and make this happen have to be congratulated.

``To see Jannik's smile as he was going down the straight made you feel good and there wouldn't have been anyone who left the track who wasn't inspired.''

A beaming Blair was obviously delighted with the racing experience, his first in official competition.

After his first race, despite some confusing moments involving a lap bell, he said he had enjoyed himself.

``I was looking over my shoulder to see where the others were, but it was great,'' he said.
