January 19, 2006 FEMA Emergency Management Higher Education Project Activity Report

(1) ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY-MESA -- FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT:

January 19, 2006 -- Received today from Leslie De Leon at ASU-Mesa, the following vacancy announcement for an Environmental or Emergency Management position and request to post it in the EM Faculty Positions section of the EM HiEd Project website -- which we will soon do:

"ArizonaStateUniversity, College of Technology and Applied Sciences, Department of Technology Management -- Assistant or Associate Professor; Environmental or Emergency Management:

Duties of the Position: Areas of teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in environmental technology management and graduate level courses in one or more of the following areas:environmental management, emergency management, or international environmental management and sustainable development. The candidate will direct student research and chair graduate student committees, serve on departmental, college and university committees, and participate in student recruitment and administration of the Environmental Technology Management program.

Qualifications Required: An earned doctoral degree in a related field and three years of directly related industrial or governmental experience; effective communication skills; dynamic and recognized research and publication record appropriate to rank; established industry and/or professional leadership, appropriate to rank, in environmental technology related area.

(2) ARKANSASTECHUNIVERSITY -- NEW MASTERS OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DEGREE PROGRAM:

January 19, 2006 -- Confirmed with Dr. Robert Schwartz, Head of the Emergency Administration and Management Department at ArkansasTechUniversity in Russellville, that its new on-line Masters degree in Emergency Management and Homeland Security began on January 17 with 16 enrolled students and that a few other students are transferring into this new program during the week. (3) CUMBERLAND COUNTY COLLEGE, NJ -- INVESTIGATING EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM:

January 10, 2006 -- Communicated with Charles Kocher, Coordinator of the Cumberland County College Homeland Security Certificate Program, about the school's investigation into the development of an Emergency Management Certificate Program to begin the Fall Semester of 2006. (4) DISCIPLINES, DISASTERS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT -- BOOK DEVELOPMENTPROJECT:

January 19, 2006 -- Received for review from book developer, Dr. David McEntire, University of North Texas, 3rd draft of chapter on "Gerontology and Emergency Management: Discovering Pertinent Themes and Functional Elements Within the Two Disciplines," by Kathy Dreyer, Texas Institute for Research and Education on Aging," Center for Public Service, University of North Texas.

(5) FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT -- GRADUATE-LEVEL COURSE:

January 19, 2006 -- The Project Assistant and I finished our review of the "final" submission of this course -- the one based on agreed-upon review comments -- and found several glitches that need to be fixed. That information was communicated to the lead course developer, Robert Freitag, University of Washington. None seem to be labor intensive to us, thus we expect to have a final "final," if that makes sense, very soon.

(6) SOUTHERN CONNECTICUTSTATEUNIVERSITY, NEW HAVEN:

January 19, 2006 -- Communicated with Dr. Bernadette Madara at SCSU, who notes forward movement in the development of a Crisis Management Graduate Program at SCSU -- working now on the development of course syllabi and search for external financial assistance. (7) WAGNERCOLLEGE, STATEN ISLAND NY -- DEVELOPING AN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM:

January 19, 2006 -- Communicated with Maureen Connolly, Dean of External Programs at Wagner, who notes that their investigation into the development of a MBA Graduate Track in Emergency Management (oriented to the business community) is progressing. A curriculum has now been designed, based on FEMA's EM HiEd Project courses, an Advisory Board has been identified, a number of qualified adjunct faculty identified and a "stamp of approval" received from the Wagner Provost and President. The last remaining part of the approval process is approval by Wagner College Academic Policy Council -- which she anticipates will grant its approval when this proposal goes before them in a few weeks.
