IT Tutor Volunteer Role Description

Objective

To help Age UK provide opportunities for people aged 50+ to learn IT skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Skills required for this role:

·  Computer literacy to the level of passing on basic IT skills to older people

·  Confidence, enthusiasm and ability to deal empathetically, patiently and sensitively with all clients

·  Excellent attendance and punctuality

·  Excellent organisational skills

·  To be able to work on own initiative

The role involves:

·  Valuing older people in our area

·  Giving our clients who may never have experienced a computer before the choice of learning something new

·  Raising awareness of the Internet and how to safely access information

·  Follow the relevant Age UK policies and procedures, in particular those of IT Users, Confidentiality, Health & Safety, Lone Working and Equal Opportunities

More specific tasks

·  To arrive 10 minutes before the start of a session to ensure all PCs are ready for users

·  To collect the Learn My Way file and diary from the Age Works office upstairs and prepare records ready for users

·  To warmly greet the clients and give brief chat re domestics (including toilets) and direct them to fire notice etc.

·  To assist all clients with their registration process and email set-up on Learn My Way

·  To assist all clients with their pursuit of individual goals in IT whether it be on-line shopping, on-line banking, price comparison, job search techniques, posting CVs to acquire employment and emailing friends and family

·  To ensure that 10 minutes before the end of any Learn My Way session, clients access their ‘learning log’ and copy the information from their session on to their personal record. All certificates are to be printed out, signed and put into the clients’ plastic sleeve containing their records. These are to be filed in alphabetical order and the file put back into the cupboard

·  To offer any client another IT appointment before they depart

·  To ensure all PCs are properly shut down, fans switched off and unplugged and windows firmly closed

·  Relate anything you are concerned about to a Project Worker before going home or leave a message for her if she is engaged

·  Remember to sign in and out of the building at Reception and wear your badge at all times

N.B. This role would be eligible for a DBS check.

Please note that your role is vitally important to the success of the project and so you must be able to commit the time required to run the service effectively
