2016 marked a significant progress in ASHI's development.

We celebrated ASHI's 25th anniversary where it all started- at UP Los Baños. Vice President Lenora Robredo graciously joined us as our guest speaker. More than 2000 ASHI Center Chiefs and Deputies from 8 provinces where we operate, attended the affair. Funders and many MFI stakeholders celebrated with us.

It should be noted that part of the cost of the anniversary celebration

was borne by the proceeds of concerts so gallantly put up by ASHI staff in Luzon and Panay.

The year 2016 is a year of big achievements in ASHI. The cost of running the business has gone down significantly even as staff count has increased to 417 and expansion is in full swing. Social Development Programs now take the frontseat.

Improved financial management: Centralizing our funds (Central Treasury Management) has brought down the cost of running the business. Also, money from Funders is drawn only when the need arise.

Outreach widened and increased: membership increased by 28% (45,289). Heavy expansion in Quezon Province.

Portfolio swelled: Loan outstanding increased by 90% (P822 Million)

Working out the Grameen Methodology for better efficiency and competitiveness: In the past, it would take 4 weeks before members could make a loan. The staff re-designed the motivation and training program so that members could be given financial support within a week. A number of simplifications were implemented in operations to cut downcosts.

Better Staff Remuneration: Staff salary increase was given based on performance.

More services to members such as the following:

  • Service and admin charge (Salamat Fund) brought down from 5% to 2% ofloan;
  • Rebates to members with outstanding creditrecord;
  • Partnership with Unilever to enable members to afford cleaner and cheaper drinkingwater;
  • Partnership with PR Gaz to enable members to move on to safer and green cookingmethods;
  • Free medical service to all active members to mark ASHI's 25th year (X-ray, cbc, urinalysis, blood typing);
  • Seminars given to prepare interested members forentrepreneurship;
  • Active non-violence seminars given to Center Chiefs to make them value more the sacredness of life and humandignity;
  • Environmental consciousness programs initiated (e.g plant a tree for every GeneralLoan)

The AGAP (ASHI Grameen Agricultural Program) was expanded: In this program, farmers who own small farms are clustered and encouraged to plant the same crops. ASHI looks for a market for their products to eliminate the middle man. Jollibee and Chowking support us here in a big way.

Two properties purchased at bargain prices: one in Los Baños, where consistently it has been difficult for the branch to find a reasonably priced property to rent, and one in Tayabas, Quezon to serve as Training Center, as ASHI spreads out towards the Southern provinces of Luzon.

The challenge as we move towards the future is how to pass on to new hires who are mostly millennials, the ASHI trademark passion for, and involvement in, its mission. Moreover, we need to upgrade sustainability ratios in order to protect ASHI against negativeuncertainty.
