International Rescue and Relief, Associate Director

Doug received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion and an Applied Theology Minor from Southern Adventist University in 1977. His Master’s degree in education was also completed at SAU with an emphasis in Teacher Outdoor Education. With thirty years experience as an educator, he has worked as dean, teacher, chaplain, outdoor education specialist and Vice Principal of Student Services. His is presently at Union College in Lincoln, NE, were he is an associate professor and serves as associate director of the International Rescue and Relief degree program.

Doug is an EMT and holdsinstructor certification in Basic and Advanced Disaster Life Support, American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Programs, Advanced Skills and Standards for High Ropes and Adventure Based Counseling.

Program Description: International Rescue and Relief (IRR) is a very unique four-year Bachelor of Science degree. It is designed for the adventurous student who wants to serve mankind in disaster and humanitarian relief. There are eight (8) emphases to choose from within the IRR major, which include the core courses. The student will gain valuable experiential knowledge during the one semester they spend overseas in an underdeveloped country their junior or senior year. Upon completion, students will be prepared in aspects of rescue, survival and humanitarian relief. Union College is proud to offer this degree in the face of increasing global uncertainty, conflict and natural disasters.

The multi-track curriculum combines rescue and survival skills, emergency care, humanitarian relief, public health, disaster management and multi-cultural service training. Some of the certifications students will receive include swift water rescue, high and low ropes rescue, confined space rescue, search and rescue and EMT-Basic. For a world facing increasing natural and man-made disasters and growing refugee populations, this major is designed to equip graduates with specialized service skills.

To provide quality training and instruction in the fields of rescue and survival, wilderness preparation, emergency care, natural disaster management and missions so that graduates may knowledgeably and supportively provide worldwide assistance in times of peace or disaster.
