It’s Time Project
Project Title: It’s TimeCourse: Business Technology Applications
Overview/Annotation: Time and attendance issues can be a controversial topic. In this project students will research the value of adhering to attendance principles. The research should include issues with tardiness, absenteeism, job abandonment, etc. Students will research various Internet resources, interview local businesses, and review school policies. Students will then prepare a time and attendance brochure that will reflect and support the school’s policy, while incorporating real-world principles.
Procedures/Activities:
1. Hand each student a copy of the school systems attendance requirements. Each student should study the handout and discuss why they agree or disagree with the attendance requirements.
2. Have students share their answers with the class and facilitate a class discussion on the importance of displaying good attendance.
3. Introduce the It’s Time Brochure Project. Distribute copies of the It’s Time Brochure Planning Sheet.
4. Distribute copies of the It’s Time Scoring Rubric and allow students to review and discuss project requirements and due date.
5. Students should be given ample time to interview outside leaders (minimum of two) and research (internet) historical data on time and attendance issues.
6. Once the research phase is complete, students should start working on a rough draft of the brochure. The goal for each brochure is that it could be used for distribution and education on time and attendance issues for other students.
The following are examples of what should/could be included:
- Company expenses for lost production
- Employment and school penalties for poor attendance
- Flexible work hours
- Internet based classes
7. Once the rough draft is complete, the student should start working on the actual brochure. Microsoft Word brochure template should be used (8.5”x11”, landscape, 2-fold format).
8. Students will include creative photo’s they have taken to help “tell their story”. Other images can be used to make the project more presentable.
9. Students will create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that shows some type of employment time and attendance shortcoming (example: if an employee were 10 minutes late, two-days per week for an entire year at $xx/hr, how much money would it costs the employee). This spreadsheet should then be inserted into the Microsoft Word brochure.
10. On the due date, students will turn in their brochure.
