Sunday, April 26, 2009: Etz O Palestine (A Film by Nathan Axelrod, Yoel Zilberg, Uri Zohar, 1962, 80 Minutes). Speaker: Prof. Nava Dushi, Lynn University

.

In celebration of Israel's Independence day (April 29), FII screens the nostalgic documentary Etz O Palestine. Based upon newsreels, this film narrates the historical background and story of the constitution and declaration of the state of Israel. This is a chapter not many remember or even know about today. Reflecting the spirit of innocence in the days before the Six Day War, this film documents the building of the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine, the inauguration of the new port in Tel Aviv, a Tel Aviv soccer match, and more. Forty-six years since it was first screened in August 1962, the freshness of the film still remains.

Sunday, May 3, 2009: Jerusalem Right - Tel Aviv Left (Directed by Alon Sharvit, 2006, 89 minutes). Speaker: Prof. Nava Dushi, Lynn University

Alon Sharvit's family, except for himself, became religious years ago. Sharvit explores the process of becoming religious or secular, focusing on the bond between the ultra-orthodox and the secular members of the family. Through the life stories of three protagonists, the journey between the sacred and the secular is described in three parts: first the tearing asunder, then thelonging for belonging and finally thereturning home. After years of searching and struggling the reconciliation takes place.
