TEXT:Statistics for management & Economics 9th Edition

Custom Edition for IDS 361 A/B

By Keller, Gerald

The Business Writers’ Handbook, by Alred, Brusaw and Oliu (10thedition) -This is a great resource for business writing and can be useful in this course

Course Objectives

To introduce students to the following concepts: Descriptive Statistics (Graphics Displays, Measures of Central Location and Variability); Probability (Basic Probability Rules, Random variables, Binomial, Normal Distributions); Estimation (Confidence Intervals, Hypothesis Testing); Prediction (Simple and Multiple Linear Regression Models) ; and Analysis of Qualitative Data (Proportions).

Students will also learn how the various techniques and approaches above can be applied to a variety of business areas that warrant the use of statistics. We also point out how statistical concepts can sometimes be misused to distort the truth and hence raising ETHICAL ISSUES.

The goal of this course is not to make you a statistician – but to make
you be able to think statistically!

All classes are subject to an administrative audit (i.e., a computer check of course records) early in the course. At this time, any student who has not met the prerequisites will be dropped from class.
Common Body Knowledge Content Coverage: This course provides a basic understanding of statistical methods and their application to problem solving.
TUTORING:There is a free tutoring service available for ISDS 361A.The tutoring center is located in MH -46 and MH-59. Visit if you would like to signup for an appointment. I highly recommend that you avail of this free service.

ASSIGNMENTS:Homework problems will be assigned during each class meeting

statistics package or a spreadsheet program. For the computer

work, we will use the Excel spreadsheet program (available in the business school lab). Some exam questions will require you to

read and interpret printouts from the Excel package.

Can you earn any extra credit in this course?

  • No extra credit assignments will be given to compensate for poor performance on any of the evaluations.

  • You are expected to attend all lectures in this course. Regular attendance is by far the key to successfully complete most of the assessments in this course.
5-10% of the grade will be strictly based on attendance.

Assigned exercises from the text book
