Dear family and friends,

I’d greatly appreciate it if you could take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to hear about a valuable program I’m trying to establish where I work. Many of you know I started the “Girls’ Night Out” club in 2011 and my main goal was to create a safe environment for teenage girls to have fun while learning valuable life lessons and give back to the community. The event is an overnight for high school girls at Iroquois. My goal was that our girls will improve their self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth while developing a sense of solidarity and a sense of pride as they give back to the community.

In 2012 we focused our guest speaker series on developing positive relationships, recognizing abusive relationships and domestic violence. We invited Mary Traverse-Murphy from The Family Justice Center to talk about the dangers of domestic violence. And Jessica Sherma from Face 2 Face came and spoke about the dangers of drugs and how students should respond to peer pressure.

Through our efforts we donated over $300, 30 boxes of toiletry items, and 35 draw-string bags full of hats/gloves, school supplies, and age appropriate toys for toddlers to teenagers to Haven House.

In 2013 we focused our theme on making healthy decisions and eating disorders. Nutritionist Shelia Flavin, Doctor Tracy Welchoff, and senior Emily Cantie spoke about making healthy decisions and Emily’s personal experience with eating disorders. We also invited Trevor Buccieri from Body, Soul, and Fitness Personal Trainer to speak on the foundation of youth and making healthy decisions in terms of working out.

Through our fundraising efforts we donated $4,700 to Teens Living with Cancer and Carly’s Club at Roswell Park Cancer Institute

The girls on my committee decided our charities of choice for this year’s proceeds will be local animal shelters. We are very excited about donating to local shelters and developing awareness in our community. We will be hosting a Pet-a-palooza at Knox Farms and the donations we collect from all of our fundraisers will be divided between the animal shelters who attend our event.

Here is a list of the fundraisers we are planning in the next few months:

Friday, March 14th – American Grille Fundraiser

(Event includes: music by Chris Maloney, basket raffle, silent auction, food, beverages, etc.)

Tuesday, April 22nd – Comedy Show at Iroquois High School

Saturday, May 3rd – Pet-a-palooza at Knox Farms

My hope is that you are able to see that there is great value in the Girls’ Night Out program. Please support the Girls’ Night Out and what we stand for – “A Good Time Doing Good!” Thank you in advance for your support and for helping me create an event to enrich and empower the young women in our building.

Any form of donation will be greatly appreciated and will go to good use! Any local businesses who make donations by March 1stcan email me their logo for the back of our t-shirts and other advertising posters and presentations posted throughout our fundraisers.

Please make checks payable to: Iroquois School

Note: please put Girls’ Night Out in the memo portion of the check.
