Don’t miss the San Diego People First Self-Advocacy Conference, which will be held on May 12 & 13, 2012 at the MarriottMissionValley.On Friday evening, May 11, SDPF will host pre-conference activities. Over 400 self-advocates attend this educational and social event to advance the cause of self-advocacy in San Diego and through out the state. This exciting event offers adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to improve their self advocacy skills and network with peers. Developmental Disability Waiver (Med-Cal) Program Presentation

The DD Waiver is the short name for the Medi-Cal Home and Community

Based Services Developmental Disability Waiver. The DD Waiver can

pay for many home and community-based services that you may need, such as: Supported living services, supported employment services, respite service for family members and other caregivers and more.

The DD Waiver is important for people with developmental disabilities. It

is used to pay for services that are provided by the regional centers.

SELN Employment Webinars at SDRC

The State Employment Leadership Network in collaboration with the Department of Developmental Services and Association of Regional Center Agencies is hosting a series of webinars on assisting individuals with developmental disabilities in finding meaningful employment in the general workforce. The goal of the series is to increase awareness about employment, and to provide a discussion forum for families, individuals, organizations, and professionals in the field.

Metropolitan Transit System

Effective March 1, 2012, new rules and procedures were put into place for carts, strollers and carry-on items taken aboard MTS buses and Trolleys. These new rules will create a saferenvironment and speed boarding and travel times for all riders.sdmts.com/cartpolicy.asp

New Community Living Division

The Department of Health and Human Services has created a new “Administration for Community Living”operating division which brings together the Administration on Aging, the Office on Disability, and the Administration on Developmental Disabilities into a single agency that supports cross-cutting initiatives and efforts focused on the unique needs of individual groups, such as children with developmental disabilities or seniors who need assistance to continue to live in their communities. This new division is dedicated to improving the lives of those with functional needs into one coordinated, focused, and stronger entity.They will seek to enhance and improve the broad range of support that individuals may need to live with respect and dignity as full members of their communities. This support extends well beyond health care and includes the availability of appropriate housing, education, meaningful relationships, and social participation.

California Health Care Survey
Anne Cohen, Disability and Health Policy Consultant and Dr. Chris Cammisa have partnered together to gather information on the necessity for and feasibility of, a leadership exchange, and / or other opportunities for collaboration, to engage the senior and disability community and health care organizations to improve health care services for seniors and people with disabilities in California. This survey is supported through funding from the California Health Care Foundation. The goal of this project is to better understand the information needs of local stakeholders (e.g., advocacy and community based organizations, health plans, and health care providers) and willingness to participate in a leadership exchange program or other opportunities for collaboration.

Autism and Family Study
Participants are needed for a CSU San Marcos study is examining the caregiving duties that adolescent’s provide to a younger male sibling with autism how these duties and social support might affect behaviors. Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) is conductng a short web survey,“Public Transit Choices By People With Disabilities”, as part of their transportation research on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The goal is to understand what factors are most important to riders with disabilities when deciding which transit mode to use. Please take the short survey.
