iPhone’s Siri Talks Turf

In Recent Release of New PACE Turf Video

“What can I help you with?” says Siri, the voice of the built-in personal assistant that comes within the latest version of the iPhone, the 4S. Siri, it turns out, talks turf.

“Search for PACE Turf soil guidelines,” Dr. Larry Stowell, Director of PACE Turf, carefully enunciates into his phone.

A few seconds later, information on nitrogen, potassium, sodium and other soil parameters appears on the iPhone screen. It seems that Siri can, indeed provide assistance to turf managers, as Dr. Stowell describes in the new video “Siri Talks Turf” now showing on YouTube.

“The idea of being able to voice command your phone from the fourth fairway is huge,” Dr. Stowell says. “Then to have artificial intelligence (Siri) pull up agronomic guidelines or disease and insect photos so that you can make comparisons right there in the field, well, that’s awesome.” In the video, Dr. Stowell offers tips and suggestions for getting the most out of your Siri-interactions, whether you are doing Google searches, identifying helpful websites, or directing you to listings of service providers.

Like other PACE Turf videos, this one is practical, to the point, and contains information that can be put to immediate use. PACE Turf videos can be placed on superintendent association websites or golf course websites by clicking on the “Share” button that appears underneath the video on YouTube. PACE Turf’s other golfer education and superintendent education videos can be viewed on the PACE Turf YouTube Channel or

“Do you love PACE Turf?” Dr. Stowell asks Siri.

“I’m sorry Larry, I’m afraid I can’t answer that,” Siri says.

“Why not?” Dr. Stowell asks.

“I don’t know. Frankly, I’ve wondered that myself,” Siri says.

(Note that all Siri/Stowell conversations in this article are real.)
