INVERNESS REPORT – JANUARY 2010

Hi All!

I start with an apology. As I am sure you appreciate, the weather at the start of the month was a nightmare for all involved. I have lived in this beautiful part of the world for 20 years and I have never experienced anything like this, nor have the locals who relate the winter of ’76 as the last worst. If it wasn’t freezing it was snowing, if it wasn’t snowing, it was freezing fog. Consequently, try as I might, it has been really hard to tie up the scheduled aircraft for the first few days, but I believe what I have recorded to be correct. There were diversions and cancellations, and vehicles used from all departments to transfer passengers to hotels, it is a shame the press never reported on how hard all the staff worked to help all involved.

Everyone worked above and beyond the call of duty to keep things moving but it was a losing battle. When the weather got worse in England as we got better, the passengers were always on the losing side.

For a while de-icing was restricted to keep the main runway and taxiway feed to the South Apron open as stocks dwindled. JCBs were brought in to clear the snow packed working areas.

Aircraft de-icing became a problem as the equipment started to fail and stocks of fluid ran out.

The flow of visiting aircraft fell dramatically with flights being cancelled due to the weather, although we could have accepted a lot of these, but operators were not prepared to accept the risk.

On the 11th temperatures actually rose to above zero to a magnificent +3!

We had to wait until the 13th for our first new visitor, indeed a new type in the shape of Phenom PT-TFK on delivery to Greece. Another highlight this month was the arrival of a new resident, M-JACK, a Beech B200GT on the 21st.

The month ended with more snow, but not nearly as bad this time.

Only to be expected, but the month totals were personally awful, 17 down on last year’s 25!!

I clocked up 9 overflights as opposed to 18 last year, so all in all a bad start to the year for me!

From the daily reports:

1st: Planned opening was 1045-2130. After several movements of the opening times around 1530 a decision was made to cancel all scheduled movements for the day. So the 1st arrival and the 1st departure for 2010 was HELIMED 2 G-SASA which was the only thing flying today. A great start to the year!

2nd: Due to being still snow-closed, the opening was 1500-2040. Everyone was struggling, and a few non-scheduled cancelled, and 2 diverted to Aberdeen (CS-DNS & CS-DUC).

3rd: At long last a near-normal day although BEE & LOG still have aircraft all in the wrong places, and aircraft de-icing equipment is giving up, delaying flights.

4th: The planned opening today was 0630-2130. We nearly made it, until another dump of snow closed the airport from 1853-2100. Subsequently an extension until about 2205 to get the mail flight out. The private flights made it a DA.2000 day! I think all the planned movements made it one way or another!

5th: The Airport was snow closed 0630-0800 & 1240-1830. It just gets worse here! Today as well as heavy snow, there were constant winds of 25kts with prolonged gusts of up to 42knots!!

9th: Freezing fog at Inverness today scuppered us. Shame as I live in Nairn just 7 miles away, and on a day off in beautiful sunshine I made some overflights! All the weather diversions at Inverness went to Aberdeen apart from LOG 779A which went to Edinburgh.

13th: Snow at Gatwick caused disruption at Inverness today, otherwise things ran normally. The first “new” number of the year was also a 1st visit of an Embraer Phenom when it chose us instead of Wick.

c/n 50000035 it is due to become SX-NSS with Gainjet in Greece. HEX code is 46BA73. PT-TFK is taped over SX-NSS.

14th: Quiet a day after the weather chaos and lack of movements! 1st in was AN26 HA-TCM operating an ambulance flight for GAMA. Another new (for us) EC.225 G-ZZSI from Bristow came in for a bit of circuit bashing. Last, but not least, was Securite Civile Dash 8 fire bomber F-ZBCM “73”on a “Humanitarian” flight. Best guess was that it was heading for the earthquake.

20th: Definitely a “training day”. Mustang G-OAMB is on a 1st visit as such, although has been here once before as PH-TXI 25.04.2008.

21st: With thanks again to Gilmar, Beech B200GT M-JACK that arrived tonight is to be based here and is operated by the same owner as G-RICK.

30th: More overnight snow, in fact a mere 2” in Nairn, but the airport remained open all day. A nice surprise was Cessna Conquest G-USAR on a 1st visit in late afternoon.
