Gettysburg Travel Project

(For those who could not join us – we will miss you – seriously!)

Introduction: You are to imagine that you have been asked to create an impressive 5 page advertising brochure for the Gettysburg battlefield. The company you are currently working for has assigned this task to you because they know that you have always had an interest in the Civil War. In addition, as a student intern for their advertising firm, they are aware of the fact that a very important New York City marketing company is looking for someone with your talent. This brochure which was requested by the National Park Service in conjunction with the Gettysburg Chamber of Commerce, will serve as the sample of your creative work. Most of the companies you plan on interviewing with require that you submit a sample of your work with your resume and application. Successful completion of this task will play a major role in determining the course of your future employment.

Task: Using the web pages referenced below, create a 5 page-advertising brochure about Gettysburg. It must include answers to the following:

  • What is Gettysburg? And why is it important in telling the story of our nation? (10 pts.)
  • Why was the battle of Gettysburg so important? (10 pts.) What happened there?Include information on how long the battle lasted, how many people were killed there and how many soldiers are buried in the NationalCemetery. (10 pts.)
  • What is there to see in Gettysburg?(10 pts.)
  • Why is it one of the most popular of the National Park Service locations east of the Mississippi? (10 pts.)
  • Where exactly is Gettysburg?(10 pts.)
  • Identify at least one significant monument will I see there and be able to photograph? (Note: Some of the nation’s best sculpture pieces are located here and the people who created them often moved on to bigger and larger work in later years. Check the Louisiana monument for example)(10 pts.)
  • Why should my I spend my recreation dollars in Gettysburg and not elsewhere?(10 pts.)
  • Who was Jennie Wade and why does she get so much attention? (5 pts.)
  • Who was “Amos Humiston” and why did he get so much national attention?(5 pts.)
  • What is the “SachsCovered Bridge” and why is it considered haunted? (5 pts.)
  • What did Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain say about Gettysburg at its dedication?(5 pts.)

The project should be creative. It should be visually pleasing. Layout is as important as the information contained in the text. Any use of color graphics will certainly improve your score.

A good place to start is:

Please note that ALL PROJECTS MUST BE TYPED AND ALL ARE DUE FOR A GRADE ON TUESDAY APRIL 22ND - NO EXCEPTIONS!This is not a series of questions to be answered one by one.
