Who we are

Kala Sangam is a Bradford-based south Asian arts, culture and heritage organisation and registered charity. Our mission is bringing people together through arts and our vision is to establish a national centre of excellence for south Asian arts, culture and heritage at St Peter’s House in Bradford. Founded in 1996, Kala Sangam has a long history of working with schools and young people. The company holds an IIP (silver) and PQASSO (level 1) and Charter Mark awards.

What we do: arts, cultural and heritage-based activities for children

Working with people of all ages, abilities, religious and ethnic backgrounds, Kala Sangam delivers a variety of programmes that aim to engage, motivate, add value, promote understanding and mutual respect. We address challenging issues of social, community, youth, cultural and health agendas for the multicultural communities of UK. We believe that fair access, enjoyment and participation in creative activities leads to more harmonious communities.

·  Performances: Kala Sangam has built a reputation for delivering high quality, innovative performances for local, regional, national and international audiences. As well as invited community guest performances, Kala Sangam is also known for its national tours and spectacular extravaganza performances featuring world class performers such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra to audiences ranging from local school children to HRH Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.

·  Academy: Kala Sangam develops and provides life long learning and training through innovative and inclusive artistic activities for all the key stages, HE/FE sector, in addition to regular accredited classes in music and dance. Our educational projects promote greater understanding and appreciation of the cultural traditions from South Asia in innovative ways, aiming to increase awareness of racial, cultural and social issues. We also deliver accredited learning programmes through Open College Network and Arts Awards.

·  Children, Young People and Families: With our long established commitment to arts in health, Kala Sangam develops and delivers health and inclusion programmes through actively engaging communities in improving their own health and wellbeing. We develop the capacity of local communities for self-determination and participation and build on the close interdependencies of art, learning, health and regeneration. Our projects include the NHS-commissioned District-wide and Healthy Living initiatives. Our respected Youth Arts programme in Bradford, Kirklees and Craven targets 13-25 year olds, including disadvantaged young people facing barriers to learning, such as young offenders, those with learning difficulties and ethnic minorities. The focus is on regenerating the lives and interests of young people through a variety of art forms with community cohesion at the heart of the work. Partnerships include BBC Children in Need and the Home Office to name a few.

·  Schools and Early Years: Kala Sangam has extensive experience in developing, delivering, monitoring and evaluating coherent and progressive experiences to enrich the lives of children and young people. We have worked with many schools locally, regionally and nationally and would be happy to provide case studies and recommendations of our work.
