RMIT Business is one of the largest Business Schools in Australia and is based at 239 Bourke Street in Melbourne’s Central Business District. Established in 1944 it is now the largest Faculty at RMIT University with around 480 staff working with approximately 19,500 students in Australia and overseas. RMIT Business earns almost three-quarters of its annual revenue from non-Government sources and is highly entrepreneurial and outward looking in its vision.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The School of Business Information Technology is multi-sectoral and offers a range of courses including certificates, advanced diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate course work programs and higher degrees by research.

Areas of research and development include information technology management issues, systems application development methodologies, knowledge and document management, networks and security of information systems and E-Commerce.

Full-fee onshore programs are a significant part of the School’s activities as well as a number of offshore programs in South East Asia.

4.JOB SUMMARY

The position is responsible for the day to day management and planning of overall administration within the School providing strategic support and advice to the Head of School for administration, teaching and research activities.

5.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Administration Manager reports to the Head of School and works collaboratively with the General Manager, Resources of the Faculty in pursuit of broader Faculty objectives.

Note that the School organisational structure will be reviewed in 2002 and is expected to change. In addition, the University is entering a period of major strategic change that may impact on the operation of the School and therefore this role.

6.SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Position Accountabilities

6.1Management and ongoing review of all administrative functions of the School including the development and implementation of policy and procedures to assist the School to achieve its strategic objectives and to generate efficiency and service improvements.

6.2Provision of a high standard of strategic advice and support to the Head of School and School Directors in areas of accountability.

6.3Ensure the School implements continuous improvement and quality management processes in its administrative activities.

6.4Under broad direction, manage the administration of the School’s course offshore programs.

6.5Assist the Head of School and senior staff with strategic and operational planning for budgets and resource allocation.

6.6Assist the Head of School and the Directors with the financial management of the School’s budget, in conjunction with the Faculty Finance Manager.

6.7Leadership, management and development of administrative staff of the School.

6.8Liaising with other areas in RMIT regarding guidance on policy, procedure and precedent including the Office of the Dean in RMIT Business, People Services, Office of Prospective Students and RMIT International.

6.9As part of the Faculty’s senior administrative group, contribute to reviews of Faculty administrative policy and procedure to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

6.10Assist in the development of a seamless environment between Higher Education and Vocational Education & Training (VET) sectors within the School.

6.11To contribute to the strategic direction setting and policy making processes of the University and the Section by participating in key Group, Section and University forums and undertaking specific Section level project/tasks.

6.11To assume joint responsibility for career development by actively participating in various activities (mentoring, job rotation, secondments and joint group projects) and producing a jointly agreed development plan identifying key areas which will assist in your personal and professional development. These activities should be consistent with the Group’s Strategic Goals.

7.QUALIFICATIONS

Mandatory:A tertiary qualification and relevant experience.

Preferred:A postgraduate qualification

8.KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

8.1Demonstrated experience in managing a similar operation using quality management principles and including the supervision and leadership of staff.

8.2Demonstrated ability to develop, interpret and implement administrative policy.

8.3A background in strategic planning and financial management.

8.4Highly developed interpersonal skills consistent with the management of staff and with people from diverse organizations and backgrounds.

8.5Experience in procedure review, introduce new business processes and manage change in a positive manner.

8.6Sound understanding of common office software packages and corporate databases.

8.7An understanding of the post-secondary education environment.

9.OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION

9.1All appointees may be required to travel to RMIT Business’ offshore operations as part of their standard duties.
