RESOLUTION 2007-251
A RESOLUTION HONORING AND CONGRATULATING RON MEEKS, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, ON WINNING SUPER BOWL XLI; REQUESTING EMERGENCY PASSAGE; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Indianapolis Colts Defensive Coordinator Ron Meeks was born in Jacksonville, one of 14 children in his family, and attended Lee High School where he played football and ran on the track team; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Arkansas State University and playing 5 seasons in the Canadian Football League, Ron Meeks began a long and successful coaching career back at his alma mater and also coached at the University of Miami, New Mexico State and Fresno State before moving on to an NFL coaching position with the Dallas Cowboys; and
WHEREAS, Coach Meeks has had a distinguished coaching career in the NFL with the Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams before joining the staff of the Indianapolis Colts as Defensive Coordinator in 2002; and
WHEREAS, as Defensive Coordinator, Ron Meeks had an instant impact on the team’s performance, which improved from a ranking of 23rd in the NFL in 2000 to the 3rd best defense in the league in 2001, and has helped the Colts to maintain the defensive prowess that, when combined with its ever-potent offense, has made the team a perennial Super Bowl contender; and
WHEREAS, the Colts finally reached the pinnacle of success by winning Super Bowl XLI in Miami in February 2007, due in no small part to Coach Meeks’ outstanding defense; and
WHEREAS, his family, friends and the entire City of Jacksonville are extremely proud of the accomplishments of Ron Meeks and his Indianapolis Colts defense, and the City desires to commemorate this outstanding achievement; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville:
Section 1. That the City hereby honors and congratulates Jacksonville native Ron Meeks, Defensive Coordinator of the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts, for his outstanding professional career and this singular achievement, and wishes him the very best of continued professional and personal success.
Section 2. Requesting Emergency Passage, Pursuant to Council Rules 4.901 Emergency. Emergency passage is requested. Super Bowl XLI was played February 4, 2007 and the Council is eager to honor and congratulate Ron Meeks with the victory of the Indianapolis Colts over the New England Patriots.
Section 3. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective without the Mayor's signature.
