RESOLUTION 2009-397

A RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING DARNELL-COOKMAN MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TONY HANSBERRY, II FOR HIS DEVELOPMENT OF AN IMPROVED SURGICAL PROCEDURE; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, Tony Hansberry, II is a fourteen year old student at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School, the county’s medical arts magnet school; and

WHEREAS, as part of his medical magnet experience, Tony participated during the summer of 2008 in an internship at the University of Florida’s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research at Shands Jacksonville, located not far from his school; and

WHEREAS, during his internship at the center, which teaches surgical techniques to medical residents and nurses, Tony Hansberry, the son of a nurse and an AME church pastor, developed a new technique for suturing hysterectomy patients using an instrument called an endo stitch that shortened the time needed for the procedure and reduced the risk of complications; and

WHEREAS, because his suggestion for the new technique has proved so promising, Tony was invited to present his findings in April at the University of Florida’s Medical School’s Medical Education Week symposium at Shands where advancements in the teaching of medical techniques are presented to physicians and medical residents; and

WHEREAS, Tony Hansberry’s outstanding achievement is worthy of recognition and reflects extremely well both on his personal initiative and skill and on the quality of the Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville:

Section 1. That the City of Jacksonville hereby honors and commends Tony Hansberry, II for his development of a new surgical technique and for the singular honor of being invited to present his research on this new technique to surgeons and medical residents at the University of Florida’s Medical School’s Medical Education Week symposium along with the other presenting physicians. The City extends its very best wishes to Mr. Hansberry for continued academic and personal success as he pursues his dream of becoming a surgeon.

Section 2. Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective without the Mayor's signature.
