Participation in the Intramural program at FMU is purely a VOLUNTARY activity and individuals participate at their own risk. Participants should be aware of the possibilities of bodily injury and should understand that they are responsible for any and all cost due to an injury or property damage sustained through participation.
PHILOSOPHY AND PURPOSE
The philosophy and purpose of the intramural program at Francis Marion University is to offer each individual the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities that will contribute to interpersonal skills with others, stimulate an interest in recreation and athletics, create a spirit of good sportsmanship, and develop skills that should serve the individual throughout life. It shall be the purpose of this program to cooperate with other organizations in promoting and maintaining the highest standards of college life while having fun in recreational activities.
ELIGIBILITY
Only current Francis Marion University students, faculty, and staff are eligible to participate in intramurals.
1. Only those who are members of the respective teams may participate in any recreational sport for that team. Meaning, you must be on the official roster, and cannot play on multiple teams for the same sport. After competing in one or more contest in any activity, students will not be allowed to switch teams.
2. If a player switches teams, the team that utilizes the ineligible player will automatically forfeit all games which said player participate. Also if a player is found to switch teams in the playoffs the same rule applies.
3. For fraternity/sorority teams, at least 1 eligible member or pledge must participate in order to collect points.
4. No person will be eligible to participate in an intramural sport if he or she is playing the corresponding varsity sport. If a player in this situation should play, all games he or she played, would be FORFEITED. A varsity player must be off the team for an entire year to be eligible for that corresponding intramural sport.
5. No additions to rosters will be permitted after the last regular season game.
6. Any participants cannot be on academic nor disciplinary probation during any intramural contest.
7. The Director of Campus Recreation will be the final judge in all cases of eligibility.
8. The Campus Recreational Sports (CRS) program holds the philosophy of sportsmanship and fair play to a higher standard. This office will not hesitate to take action on infractions relating to eligibility and sportsmanship before, during, or after a sport is played.

Intramural activities include several annual championship awards. They are: most overall points for fraternity and sorority, overall points for independent team for men’s and women’s, and total overall point’s championship for

TEAM MANAGERS: DUTIES
Each team should select a team manager. The team manager should be the leader and spokesperson for that organization at all meetings of the Intramural program. His or her duties include:
1. Attends all meetings and submit a team entry form by the due date.
2. Know and enforce all eligibility rules governing participation, and submit a roster of all players’ Full names and student ID numbers.
3. Print clearly upon various score sheets the names and initials of all players participating in each game and assist the officials in obtaining correct names when changes in the line-up are made.
4. Be responsible for having teams assembled at the proper time and place for scheduled activities.
5. Encourage recreational interest for each group.
6. Ensure that their team does not forfeit.
SPORTSMANSHIP RATING SYSTEM
1. Regulations: Part of the philosophy of CRS (Campus Recreation Services) Program is that sportsmanship includes fairness, courtesy, good attitude and grace. All individuals and teams participating shall be expected to comply with this philosophy, as well as the letter of the rules that govern all competitive situations. In order to encourage proper conduct during contests, officials, supervisors and administrative personnel will make the decision whether to warn, penalize or eject persons or teams displaying poor sportsmanship. The Intramural Student Advisory Committee, made up of intramural managers and staff, will rule on penalties to be enforced as a result of unsportsmanlike conduct. Each official will assess a rating for each team individually and not in conjunction with another official or the supervisor on duty. Sportsmanship ratings are recorded along with a team’s win-loss record and can be viewed by any member.
2. Rating System: At the end of each contest the official will evaluate the performance of each team concerning their sportsmanship. Each evaluation is conducted separately. The points are then averaged to provide an overall grade for each team. The points are recorded along with the team’s win-loss record. Official’s decisions concerning sportsmanship displayed in a contest are final. Teams may check their rating on the Intramural Board located in the Smith University Center.
The rating system, its point values and criteria for each category are as follows:
· 5 points. This rating will be given to a team which demonstrates qualities of extremely good sportsmanship toward both the team and the officials. The rating will be given when there is an attitude of complete cooperation by all team members and spectators throughout the entire game. Respect and encouragement for the officials and opponents must also be shown.
· 4 points. This will be given to a team if only minor infractions of sportsmanship occur and the game progresses without undue problems.
· 3 points. This rating will be given when warnings are necessary. Such as a player or spectator clearly related to the team is warned by an official of abusive language or remarks toward the official or opponent. Players other than the team captain question the officials concerning decisions made by said officials.
· 2 points. A player or spectator clearly related to the team continues to make abusive and disrupted remarks toward an official or an opponent. Players, other than the captain continuous questioning officials or repeatedly argues with an official. When any alcohol is brought to the contest by team members or their spectators.
· 1 point. A team fails to cooperate with the officials to keep the game running in an orderly and timely fashion. Individual participants or coaches are removed from the facility and/or a technical foul/penalty is given for spectator’s actions.
· 0 points. If a player is ejected by an official for abusive remarks or after being warned for unnecessary roughness.
· A contest maybe stopped by the official(s) or university officials when: More than one player is ejected for abusive language, unnecessary roughness or playing under the influence of alcohol. Or any other situation deemed appropriate.
· All spectators are cleared from a team’s side for persistent unsportsmanlike conduct, alcohol use, abusive remarks, or physical involvement in the game’s progression or pushing shoving match begins with players on more than one occasion.
· Violations: Poor team rating (3 points or below) and actions of individuals ejected from a contest warrant immediate action by the Director of Intramurals. These individuals and/or teams are ineligible for further participation until they appear before the Director of Intramurals.
· Playoff Eligibility: To be eligible for the playoff of a particular sport, teams or organization must have a cumulative average rating for sportsmanship throughout the regular season totaling at least 3.0 out of the 5 ratings. And must maintain a 3.0 or higher to stay in the playoffs.
Teams are responsible for their sportsmanship throughout the season. In the event that a team has a rating below a 3.0 and their remaining contests are rained out or forfeited, the existing score will stand and they will not be eligible for the playoffs. Games that are won by forfeit will apply a 3.0 sportsmanship rating to the team, meaning if a team forfeits a game the sportsmanship rating is 0 and the winning team 5.0.
OFFICIALS
1. Interested students may become officials by contacting the CRS office (84)661-1186), taking a sports specific rule test, and attending officiating clinics and observing games.
2. Officials will be assigned games based on their experience, evaluations of teams and supervisors, class schedule.
3. Officials will be compensated for games.
4. All officials must have a 2.0 GPA, and not be on disciplinary probation.
FORFEITS
If a team or participant fails to appear at the scheduled place for a
contest, the official may declare the contest a forfeit. “Game time is forfeit time.” Members of the team ready to play may decide, in certain situations, to play the contest and take the result of the game.
A team automatically forfeits any contest in which it uses an ineligible player. The ineligible person will become reinstated at the discretion of the Director of Campus Recreation.

4. Games in which a protest is sustained shall be replayed from the point of protest.
