INTRODUCTION

From 2002-2003 we mainly focused on two aspects of child education which was implemented in our two respective schools at Barasat and Kidderpore. The Kidderpore and the Barasat school worked under the title of “Outreach of slum children” and “Look for the light by rural children” respectively.

List of activities undertaken By ISW at the Khidderpore school Project(Outreach of slum children”)

1)  Drawing Workshop

The work shop had been divided into four rounds with fifty participants, each round stretching for an hour.

Objectives

·  Development of imaginations.

·  Development of creative thinking.

·  Development of group work and cooperation assessment of a child’s mental set up.

Achievements

The children had participated in an art competition by GPO kolkata. They have also contributed paintings to the annual publications issued by ISW.

1)  Music Workshop

The children had an initiation in rhyming through music and listening to music and thus in the process identifying the song. They were also given lessons in music and were encouraged to arranged music competitions.

Objectives

·  Create cultural awareness among children.

Achievements

·  Breaking the monotony of slum life

·  Fostering cooperation among slum children

3) Games Workshop

Games form an important part in childrens everyday life. The project had encouraged the children to indulge in different sorts of indoor games. There were around participants at this workshop.

Objective

The project aimed at the following expectations

A)  Sentence making

B)  Mathematical Calculations

C)  Developing presence of mind

Achievements

The children through active participation in the various games coordinated by teachers like solving simple maths, counting , musical chair etc have developed a strong sense of numericals and a presence of mind.They have also developed a sense of group co-ordination and fraternity by indulging in collective acticities.

4)  Drama Workshop

The children were asked to perform specific scenes enacted by their favourite actors and their own embellishment to the parts. They were also given lessons pertaining to body language and posture through synchronized dance lesson and voice modulation.

Objective

1)  Role play with their lessons.

2)  Role play with practical life issues to make them more conscious of the prevailing socio-economic circumstances.

3)  Foster their creativity and imagination.

Achievements

After being given the scope of acting the children became much more agile and have become more receptive to others sorrows.

5) Film Shows

Film shows were organized at the Khidderpore school to make them understand about the exploitation they are subjected to and also expose them to their degrading socio-economic realities.

Objective

The Subjects of the films have been

a)  Problem of child labour

b)  Leadership initiatives

c)  Practical life situations

Achievements

Videos were hired from The Bristish Council and Satyajit Ray Film Acrhive. Films like “Meena”, “Pather Panchali” were some of the movies that were shown.The children realized that due to their economic condition how much deprived they are from the society and to be at par with the society what are the required action that should be taken by them.

5)  Non-formal Education

Non-formal education are imparted to students from standard five till eleven by experienced teachers. The students are generally children enrolled in the local ,who are the first generation literates of their family and thus do not get help from their parent and also cannot afford a private tution.

Objective

Helping the needy and the intelligent achieve better and higher standards through excellence in education.

Achievements

Five girls had appeared for the Madhyamik Examination(10th standard) this year.All of them passed and one of them secured second division.It was really difficult to believe that they were all first generation literates from their family.

Excursion

The children had been taken to the zoo, millennium park and other such places of tourist interest to break the boredom of monotonous activities.

1  Drama Workshop

The workshop had been designed on the content of the book such as “Sahaj Paath” written by Rabindranath Tagore.The process helps the children to memorize the content take more interest in learning the lessons.

2.  Recitation

These children generally have an inherent difficulties in pronunciation. In an attempt to assist them in overcoming these difficulties poetry and rhymes are taught with a special workshop method. Specialized persons are invited to conduct this workshops.

4. Quiz Contest

General knowledge lessons are imparted as a part of the regular schedule in order to raise awareness among the children. In order to encourage the process of learning quiz contest are organized occasionally where children from other schools are also invited.

5. Designing Educational Materials

There are five classes starting from Nursery to Class IV with a total number of 250 students enrolled in this school. The students are taught with the help of educational materials which are either prepared by the students themselves aided by their teachers, or are bought from outside. The Books that are bought from different publishers in accordance with the syllabus.
