The Dead Sea

Despite its ominous name, the Dead Sea's high-mineral content is actually a source of many health benefits. The Dead Sea is really a large lake in the Jordan Rift Valley in the Middle East. Its waters are rich in potassium, calcium chloride, magnesium, and bromides. These minerals are beneficial to people's health. This is the reason that people have traveled to the Dead Sea for centuries hoping to improve their health.

People believe the main benefit of all of the minerals in the Dead Sea is for the skin, but not only for the skin. They also benefit one's overall health. For example, the magnesium makes skin look younger, but it also helps the nervous system. Potassium can transform dry, itchy skin into moisturized, silky skin, while the bromides relax tense muscles. The Dead Sea also provides cosmetic benefits. When the mud from the bottom of the Dead Sea is rubbed on the skin or when one soaks in the mineral-rich waters, it is said that he or she will enjoy younger-looking skin and healthier hair. These beliefs may seem like no more than local legends; however, several comprehensive studies have been done to confirm what people who live in the area have known for centuries.

In these studies, patients suffering from a variety of ailments were treated with Dead Sea salt baths. Several positive results occurred. Dead Sea salt treatment was shown to be beneficial for patients with bone and joint problems, like osteoarthritis and tendonitis. These patients found that they could move more easily after the treatment. Patients with skin problems, like psoriasis or dermatitis, also found benefits from the treatment. Their skin itched less, they experienced less skin scaling, and they slept better.

This research suggests that merely adding Dead Sea salt to one's bath may improve one's health; nevertheless, there are several benefits to visiting the Dead Sea in person. The warm, dry weather; high oxygen content in the air; and bromide-rich atmosphere seem to affect positively how people feel. It is evident that this sea, rich in minerals and surrounded by clean air, does not live up to its name at all. In fact, it should be renamed The Sea of Life.
