INFORMATION SHEET FOR CASA VOLUNTEERS MONITORING COURT ORDERS RELATED TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE, MENTAL HEALTH, AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY SERVICES

  1. SERVICES PROVIDED BY CSB UNDER THE RESTRUCTURING

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES – General mental health services are not provided by CSB. However, upon client entry, they will provide screening to determine if a client is Seriously Mentally Ill (SMI). If SMI is determined, they will provide services. If not SMI, psychological evaluations and treatments are outsourced.

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES–CSB provides services for adults with Intellectual Disabilities.

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS–Alcohol and Drug Services (ADS) is NOW Substance Use Disorders (SUD). CASA volunteers access SUD records through the Assessment and Referral Center.

  1. STEPS AND TIPS FOR CASA VOLUNTEERS TOACCESS INFORMATION FROM THEASSESSMENT REFERRAL CENTER
  1. Have the client sign a RELEASE FORM. NOTE:THERE IS A NEW RELEASE FORM – WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED FROM YOUR SUPERVISOR, OR THE CASA OFFICE.
  1. Call the SUD counselor and inform them:
  2. You will be faxing a copy of the release FORM.
  3. Ask them to fax to you a COPY OF THE ASSESSMENT once the release is received.
  4. Let them know you will be calling for MONTHLY UPDATES.
  1. FAX (do not send electronically) the release directly to 703-359-6546 – to the attention of John Murnane. If you do not have access to a fax, please ask your supervisor to fax the release for you.
  1. Receiving the Assessment:
  2. SUD INFORMATION IS HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL/PROTECTED INFORMATION. CASA volunteers ARE ENTITLED TO THE ASSESSMENT ONLY. No access will be given to the entire file – and it is not needed.
  3. The assessment will not be available until after SUD has staffed the case.
  4. The Assessment includes the following:
  5. Family History
  6. Employment History
  7. Urine Screenings
  8. Substance use history
  9. Medical history
  10. Mental health status/diagnosis
  11. Treatment Recommendations and Reason
  1. When calling for monthly updates, ask the counselor the following questions:
  2. Confirm the treatment recommendations.
  3. Hastreatment begun? If not, when will it begin?
  4. If treatment has started, is client consistent in attendance/participation?
  5. Is client making progress?
  6. Does client appear to have family support?
  1. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN TRYING TO OBTAIN INFORMATION FROM THE ASSESSMENT REFFERAL CENTER
  1. Understand the Assessment Referral Center Process
  2. Initial Visit and Screening.
  3. ARC will staff the case.
  4. Client is brought in to go over their treatment recommendations (CASA volunteers must never discuss treatment recommendations with the client until the ACR staff has disclosed the information to the client).
  5. Client is given an opportunity to ACCEPT or REJECT the treatment recommendations.
  6. Treatment is voluntary.
  1. Understand the Timeline for Services
  2. Often it takes 3 weeks to schedule the initial Intake appointment.
  3. Can take 2 weeks to staff a case.
  4. Can take a week or so to get the client into outpatient treatment, 4-6 weeks to get clients into Intermediate Care, and up to a month to get clients into Long-term Treatment. However, these wait list times vary from site to site, as well as by program.
  1. Waitlist information – status/what happens to clients on waitlist

a. Clients are expected to attend groups 2x/week while awaiting placement.

b. Clients who have a Court date which could result in he/she being incarcerated scheduled within 30 days of admission will NOT be admitted.

c. Urine screens and breathalyzer tests are administered on a regular basis.

d. Due to the extremely high case loads, status reports are available on clients who test positive while attending group.
