2. As walk 1 to Thwaite Bridge then Cotter Riggs, Cotter End, The High Way [track] to High Dike, Blades, Moorcock Inn – 11 miles; 1,750 ft ascent
3. As walk 1 to Hardraw then Pennine Way to Bluebell Hill gradually descending into Cotterdale, open moor to High Dike, Blades, Moorcock Inn – 8 miles; 1,500 ft ascent
4. As walk 3 to High Dike then head S E along The High Way [path] to Cotter Riggs, Thwaite Bridge then as walk 1 to finish – 12 miles; 2,000 ft ascent
5. As walk 3 to Pennine Way then climb to Great Shunner Fell top, returning to Crag End Beacon, descend to Cotterdale, then as walk 3 to finish – 15 miles; 2,600 ft ascent
NOTES / 1. The area around Garsdale Head is a little remote but very scenic. Cotterdale is a little known dale worth visiting. It has its own small hamlet and waterfall. Cotter Force, a series of six waterfalls, is in a lovely secluded wooded setting.
2. When the weather is good Lady Anne’s High Way [grassy track] provides easy and pleasant walking high above Garsdale Head, with magnificent views along both Mallerstang and Wensleydale.
3. On walks 3 & 5 part of the route is across scenic moorland that can be confusing, especially in mist. Make sure you carry, or are with someone who carries a map and compass.
4. The Moorcock Inn serves sandwiches and hot baguettes during the afternoon (up to 6.00pm) as well as a range of real ales, normally there’s a choice of four! Should you wish to contact the Inn their phone number is 01969 667488
5. The coach will park behind the Inn and will depart at 6.30pm.
6. Make a note of the emergency telephone number 01325 303555 (Ineos Security) and use it when in difficulty or when it becomes obvious that you will arrive late at the pick-up point. State your name, number in party, where you are, what your intentions are and how/where you might be contacted back!
