Independent Novel Study- Composition 11

Select a book you like and read it. Complete the ongoing activities based on your novel. When you finish your novel, you may complete your assignment using your new book or the one you have finished; the most important element to remember is that you should always be reading.

You need to finish at least one book by October 30, 2017 so be sure to take your book home and read it consistently.

  1. After reading the first five chapters, complete and submit the Journal Chart (see attached).

  1. Character Analysis: Write a paragraph of at least six sentences describing the protagonist. Introduce who the protagonist is and what his or her personality is like. Your paragraph needs to have at least three qualities. Remember to use an introduction and a conclusion.

  1. You should be finished at least one book by this point. Write a paragraph of at least eight sentences about the theme of your book. What message is the writer trying to express to the reader? How do you know? Find at least three examples from the book. Remember to use an introduction and a conclusion.

Due: October 30(/10)

  1. Write a business letterevaluating one of the books you have read this term to me. Your letter needs to have four paragraphs. The topics of each paragraph are as follows:
  2. Describe what part of the book you felt was very exciting and engaging. What was your favourite part of the book?
  3. Identify in your opinion theauthor’s, or the story’s, greatest weaknesses and what you would do to change it.
  4. Explain whether or not you would recommend this novel to other students in your class.

The letter should be one page only and single spaced. Structure it as a business letter.

  1. Presentation “Book Talk” (3 minutes). Include the following elements:
  2. A brief summary of the novel
  3. Book quote and explanation
  4. Strengths/weaknesses
  5. Recommendations
  6. Speech mechanics (eye contact, articulation, volume, body language, etc.)
