THE LION’S ROAR

Nov. 7, 2016

CHANGE IN SCHEDULE THIS WEEK…

In honor of Veteran’s Day, there will be no school on Friday, Nov. 11th.

WORD OF THE MONTH…

November’s Word of the Month is GRATITUDE

Gratitude is expressing thanks or appreciation for what one has—instead of what one wants or needs. When we think about having a “glass half full” mentality, gratitude is what gets poured into the glass to make it half full. Gratitude not only can be intentionally nurtured but can increase levels of well-being and happiness among those who focus on what they are grateful for. In addition, grateful thinking—and especially showing it to others—is associated with higher levels of energy, optimism, and empathy. Talk with your student about what gratitude looks like in your home, at school, and in the community. See the attached poster to hang at home. Consider creating a daily gratitude list or journal to grow a culture of gratitude in your family and in your home.

VETERAN’S DAY ASSEMBLY…

We would like to invite you and your friends and relatives who are Veterans to attend our Veteran’s Day assembly next Monday, Nov. 14, at 9:00am. We would like to honor all Veterans in attendance. We will also be receiving the 5K trophy and check at that assembly.

PLEASE HELP THE OFFICE STAFF…

…SICK CHILDREN AT SCHOOL…

If your child complains they are sick before school, please consider keeping them home from school that day. We are sending many children home each day because they are coughing and/or throwing up. We try very hard to keep illness from spreading to staff and students, and appreciate you helping by keeping your sick children at home. We realize that it is not always convenient for you, but home is the best place for sick children. Thank you so much for your cooperation. Please see the attached document on when to keep your child home from school.

…CALL IN ABSENCES…

If your child is absent, please call in to the office before school begins and leave a message clearly stating your child’s name, their teacher or room number, and the nature of the absence. 425-431-7365, option #1.

…CHANGE IN TRANSPORATION…

If you have a change in transportation for your child on a given day, please do the following:

-Tell your child/ren before they leave home in the morning

-Send a note with your child to give to their teacher

-Email the teacher

Of course, if it is a situation that changes during the school day, please call the school. It’s easiest to notify your student’s classroom if we get a call before 2:30.

…MID-DAY PICKUPS…

Please send a note to your child’s teacher if you will be picking them up early. If you can avoid picking up your child between the hours of noon and 1:00 (lunch/recess hour), that would be really helpful. Also, it would be appreciated if you do not ask to take your child within 30 minutes of dismissal time. Both the office and the classrooms are pretty high-energy places at the end of the day.

HEALTH ROOM CLOTHING…

If your child has borrowed clothing from the health room recently, please return the items soon. We are especially low on sweatpants for both boys and girls in sizes 5-10. If you have any to donate, that would be much appreciated.

CANDY FOR A CAUSE…

One of our parents, Ally Jones, started a tradition with her sons and is looking for a little extra help this year from the Pride of Lions. Every year she and her boys collect extra Halloween candy to donate to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The candy is used to help alleviate dry and bad tasting mouths after chemo treatments. It is an ongoing need, but Halloween helps keep the candy bowl full for a while. Last year Ally and her boys collected over 200 pounds of candy with your help! They’re hoping to beat that number this year. If you have candy you would like to donate, please send it to the office in a bag marked “SCCA.” We will collect it here in a box until Thursday, and give it to the Jones Family for SCCA from all the Lions of Lynndale! So far we have collected 2-1/2 boxes of candy. Thank you so much for your generosity, Lions! You’re the best.

MEAN MOTHERS…HUMOR

Have you ever been called the ‘meanest mom’? When I was raising my children, I continually told them that I was President of the Mean Mother’s Club, and my best friend was the Vice President. I think they believed me. Well, I am cleaning out my mother’s house in preparation for putting it on the market and ran across a Dear Ann Landers feature from 1970 that I couldn’t resist sharing with you. Please take a couple minutes and be humored by the attached document.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT COMMUNITY EVENT…

If you would like to give input to the district about how to support partnerships between families, community, and schools, please plan to attend an informational session on Nov. 17th. See attached document for details.
