Title:Ultimate Frisbee 3
Subject:Physical Education
Grade Level:8
Overview:
Today, the students will practice throwing and learn the rules of ultimate frisbee.
Approximate Duration:50
Content Standards:
- Standard 1
Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. - Standard 2
Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. - Standard 3
Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
Benchmarks:
- 1-M-1
Demonstrates the ability to combine locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills (e.g., combines running, stopping, throwing, shooting and kicking). - 1-M-2
Exhibits basic strategies related to specific lead-up games (e.g., basic offense and defense; strategies related to cooperative activities). - 1-M-3
Demonstrates basic competency in more complex motor skills and more advanced specialized skills (e.g. hand dribble and foot dribble to prevent an opponent from stealing) related to specific sports activities (e.g., participates in modified versions of team sports such as basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer). - 1-M-5
Demonstrates strategies for net and invasion games (e.g., keeping object going with partner using striking pattern, placing ball away from opponent in a racket sport, hand and foot dribble while preventing an opponent from stealing the ball). - 2-M-1
Analyzes and applies basic concepts to improve movement, dance, fitness, game and sports skills being practiced (e.g., throws softball different distances using varied trajectories and amounts of force). - 2-M-2
Demonstrates how practicing movement skills improves performance (e.g., maintains a log of practice attempts for throwing a softball at a target, compares differences in successful throws from first attempts to last attempts). - 2-M-4
Recognizes and applies principles necessary for safe and skilled physical performance (e.g., never shoot an arrow up into the air; always include a warm-up and cool-down component as part of the activity). - 3-M-2
Explores a variety of new physical activities for personal interest in and out of physical education class (e.g., participates in games, sports, dance, and outdoor pursuits both in and out of school based on individual interests and capabilities; explores new activities on the Internet).
Educational Technology Standards:
- Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools, web tools) to gather information for problem solving, communication, collaborative writing and publishing to create products for various audiences.
Objectives:
TSWL how to explain the rules of ultimate frisbee.
TSWL how to demonstrate and throw a frisbee.
TSW practice throwing during team activities in circles.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
Frisbees
Cones
Field
Lesson Procedures:
-Students will dress in/warm up.
-Warm up includes stretching. Each stretch will last 10 seconds. They will do: right/left arm across chest, raise both arms behind their back, arm circles foward, arm circles backwards, feet together toe reaches, right foot over left foot toe reaches, left foot over right foot toe reaches, straddle wide and reach to the right foot, straddle wide and reach to the left foot, butterfly stretches, 25 sit ups, 15 push ups, and a 3 minute run.
-Students will sit and be introduced to ultimate frisbee.
-The teacher will give a brief overview of ultimate frisbee: similar to flag football or speed ball, throw frisbee to teammates without running with the frisbee, once you catch it you cannot move, a defender has to be 3 feet away from frisbee thrower, if a frisbee is dropped the other team recovers, if a frisbee is thrown out of bounds the other team throws it back into play, if a frisbee is batted down then the team that threw it recovers it, a team scores by passing the frisbee to a play in the endzone.
-The teacher will go over safety rules for frisbees. Do not throw it anyone who is not looking, call the person's name out before throwing it to them, throw the frisbee properly, do not hit anyone with the frisbee, and do not kick or step on the frisbees.
-The teacher will show the class how to throw a frisbee. Step with throwing foot, throw from opposite hip across body, do not follow through, point to target when throwing hand is releasing the frisbee. If you follow through too much on a throw it will go wide right/left depending on throwing hand. If you release too soon the frisbee will go short to the right/left depending on throwing hand. If you throw with an upward motion the frisbee will go high then back towards the thrower. If you throw the frisbee too low it will hit the ground.
-The teacher will show proper ways to catch the frisbee. The two handed finger catch is when the four fingers of each hand are on top the frisbee while the thumbs of each hand are on the bottom of the frisbee. A cue for this could be, pinch the frisbee like crab claws. The second catch, is when you place one hand under and one hand on top of the frisbee. A cue for this could be, flatten the frisbee like dough or paper.
-The teacher will place the students into pairs. Each student will stand at a cone across from their partner.
-Students will practice throwing the frisbee back and forth with a short controlled pass. The teacher will walk around the class and observe each student throwing. The teacher will give help and cues to those who are having difficulty.
-The teacher will separate the class into 4 teams. The class will keep these teams throughout the unit.
-Each team will stay together each day and practice amoung themselves, building teamwork and strategies.
-Each team will form a circle around the assigned cone. They will practice throwing the frisbee to their teammates. They are to call out their teammates name before throwing the frisbee to him/her.
-After 5 minutes of practice the teacher will add another frisbee. Each team will have 2 frisbees to their group. They are to constantly throw both frisbees at the same time. They are to call out the players name before passing it to avoid throwing 2 frisbees at one person.
-After each team has practiced the teacher will hold a competition with the teams. The teams will stay in their formed circles for the competition.
-Each team must throw the frisbee back and forth to their teammates without dropping the frisbee. The team with the highest number of throws without dropping the frisbee will win the competition.
-After the competition is complete the teacher will hold a cool down and closure.
-The cool down will be a light stretching of the arms again. Each stretch will be 10 seconds long. Right/left arm across chest, small and large arm circles forward/backwards, and arms extended out reaching forward.
-The teacher will hold a closure and ask questions such as: Which foot steps foward while throwing the frisbee? How close can a defender guard a thrower? What happens if you follow through too much while throwing(the frisbee will sail too high and to the right or left). What should you do if the wind is blowing to the right?(throw the frisbee a little to the left to let the wind take it to the right) What should you do if the wind is blowing hard towards you?(throw the frisbee hard to make it move throw the head wind) What would you do if the wind is blowing from behind?(throw the frisbee softly to let the wind take it to the target)
-After asking the students questions the teacher will assign a technology assignment. The students are to visit and bring back one rule of ultimate frisbee on a piece of paper. They are to turn it in the next time their class meets. The teacher will then have them read the rule out loud in the introduction of the next lesson.
-Students will dress in.
Assessment Procedures:
The teachers will walk around and observe students behavior. The teacher will hold a closure at the end of class reviewing what was taught and asking questions that require higher order of thinking(see closure in "lesson procedures."
Accommodations/Modifications:
Those who have problems with catching and throwing will be allowed to practice for a longer period of time instead of playing ultimate frisbee.
Explorations and Extensions:
Students will visit and find one rule for Ultimate Frisbee.
